1. HOUSTON TEXANS
REGGIE BUSH RB Southern Cal Scouting Report
In most years there is a lot of intrigue surrounding the #1 pick and often times we don't know who it will be until just days or even minutes before the draft begins but that isn't the case this time around. In fact, late in the regular season the race for the worst record in the league had already been dubbed the "Reggie Bush Sweepstakes" by the media and fans. At this point it really isn't a question of if the Texans will make Bush the #1 overall pick but rather should they. There is no denying his talent and Reggie Bush is arguably the most dynamic and exciting prospect to come along in quite some time, capable of beating teams as a runner, receiver or return man. Keep in mind however that Houston is a franchise which already has a running back in Domanick Davis who has rushed for about 1,000 yards in each year of his career who they just recently signed to a new $21.1 million contract extension, not to mention a Pro Bowl kick returner in Jerome Mathis. There is no question that Bush will make any team better but it prompts the question of how much of an opportunity will he have to make an impact with those two around? If nothing else Bush would probably be regarded as a first round-caliber prospect if you were looking at him only as a receiver and that is indeed an area where the team will be able to make ample use of his special abilities. The smart football move would probably be to trade down a few spots and nab D'Brickashaw Ferguson, who would finally solidify the offensive line that has been a major problem area for the franchise since their inception in 2002, and while that's still technically an option it doesn't appear likely at this point so Bush is the pick.

2. NEW ORLEANS SAINTS
MARIO WILLIAMS DE North Carolina St. Scouting Report
If you ever needed to make a case for how drastically free agency can affect the NFL Draft the Saints signing of Drew Brees would probably be labeled as "Exhibit A". Everyone, including yours truly, had this pick as an absolute lock to be a quarterback, most likely Matt Leinart. That all changed when Brees was signed though and while the ultimate ramifications of the move have yet to be seen it has sent shockwaves through the league and really shaken up the top of the draft order. By all accounts the player New Orleans is targeting is Mario Williams, even though they already have two excellent former first rounders in Charles Grant and Will Smith at the position. The big question now is whether the Saints will pull the trigger on a trade and move down a bit or if they will simply select him at #2 overall. Based on talent Williams is certainly worthy of this high of a pick, even in a strong draft, and he is easily the best defensive end prospect to come along since Julius Peppers with a freakish blend of size, speed and athleticism. Simply put, he could potentially be one of the elite players at his position in the entire league. D'Brickashaw Ferguson would also make some sense for the Saints and give them an outstanding set of bookend tackles while A.J. Hawk would address a major need if they moved down. At this point you still can't completely rule out a signal caller yet but as of this moment the odds seem to favor Williams being their guy, whether it be here or just a little later.

3. TENNESSEE TITANS
MATT LEINART QB Southern Cal Scouting Report
In every draft there is a pick that, depending on how it is used, dictates how the rest of the first round unfolds and you can make a case that this year the Titans are holding that influential selection. The consensus seems to be that this pick will be a quarterback, but which one? Matt Leinart? Vince Young? On one hand you have Young, who has a tantalizingly high upside not to mention a strong bond with their current quarterback Steve McNair, who has been a father figure and mentor to him since his days in high school. On the other hand however you have Leinart, the Heisman Trophy winner who offensive coordinator Norm Chow personally molded during his days with the Trojans as well as a head coach in Jeff Fisher who is also a Southern Cal alum. This could be a moot point if Leinart comes off the board earlier but if both are still available I think the Trojan ties win out and he would be the pick. Everyone knows his story and while he isn't the most physically impressive quarterback prospect to come down the pipe he is easily one of the most polished, with intangibles that are off the charts. Then again the Titans could fool everyone and go in another direction altogether in which case D'Brickashaw Ferguson would be the most likely option as a replacement for Brad Hopkins along the offensive line. One way or another this is going to be a very interesting situation to watch develop as the draft nears and will play a major role in determining just where the top three quarterbacks will ultimately land.

4. NEW YORK JETS
D'BRICKASHAW FERGUSON OT Virginia Scouting Report
Perhaps no team has been the topic of as many rumors in regards to the draft as the Jets in recent months, who at one time or another have been linked to just about everyone from Jay Cutler to A.J. Hawk. The key however is to sort through all the misinformation and in the end I think D'Brickashaw Ferguson will be their choice. An outstanding athlete for the position, Ferguson has everything you look for in a franchise left tackle and deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as guys like Tony Boselli, Jon Ogden and Orlando Pace. With Jason Fabini gone the team is left with Adrian Jones and Marko Cavka as their starting bookends, who are both former second day picks and still very raw, so bringing in Ferguson to anchor the offensive line for the next decade or so would make a whole lot of sense. With the restructuring of Chad Pennington's contract and the trade for Patrick Ramsey it would appear that quarterback is no longer an option here, but as well all know looks can be deceiving. At this point the team shouldn't feel real comfortable going into the season with either of those guys so Jay Cutler or a trade up to #2 for Matt Leinart are still very real possibilities at this point as well. If they stay here though Ferguson is the happy medium where talent meets need and would be a safe pick that they really couldn't go wrong with. There will continue to be heavy doses of speculation, gossip and innuendo surrounding this pick right up to the last minute though because that really is the New York way.

5. GREEN BAY PACKERS
A.J. HAWK OLB Ohio St. Scouting Report
This is a franchise that is stuck between two worlds, nearing the end of the Brett Favre era and still trying to compete for one last Super Bowl with him yet also trying to get younger and build for the future. The strains of this plan became very evident a year ago when the Packers chose Aaron Rodgers, an heir apparent to the franchise icon, in round one when he unexpectedly fell into their laps. While that struggle will likely continue until Favre finally hangs up his cleats it won't have any affect on this choice. When all is said and done this will likely work out very well for the Packers because they will more than likely be able to address their most glaring need, linebacker, with the top rated player at the position. Former first rounder Nick Barnett has a firm grasp on one of the jobs but Green Bay might very well be in the market for two new starters outside with Ben Taylor, Brady Poppinga and Robert Thomas currently battling for spots on the first unit as of now. Not exactly anything to get too excited about. Anyone who saw a Ohio St. game this past season knows what a force A.J. Hawk can be and he is the rare linebacker who can seemingly dominate and control a game. The team would also strongly consider Mario Williams if he somehow fell this far, which is doubtful at best, while Michael Huff and maybe even Haloti Ngata could garner interest as well. At the end of the day Hawk would seem to be the ideal match, giving them a great leader and playmaking presence on defense.

6. SAN FRANCICSO 49'ERS
VERNON DAVIS TE Maryland Scouting Report
When you look at it from a talent perspective the Niners should probably be choosing higher than this but thanks to a couple of meaningless wins down the stretch they are stuck here. There aren't too many positions on this team that couldn't use help in some form or another and while this was an extremely close call between Vernon Davis and Michael Huff their need for some offensive firepower won out in the end. Last year they made Alex Smith the #1 overall pick in the entire draft so it only makes sense to provide the young quarterback with some weapons to throw to, which is even more important for this team since they lack a top wide receiver. Granted they do have Eric Johnson who is very good when healthy but he has basically missed the past two seasons with injuries and just can't be counted on at this point. Vernon Davis is the quintessential workout warrior and he drew raves with his performance at the Scouting Combine where he checked in at 6-3 3/4 and 263 lbs. yet still managed to run an astounding 4.38 forty, which was faster than most running backs and wide receivers. Don't think that he wasn't productive on the field as well though because he was, leading the ACC in receiving this past season. Davis is as good as any tight end prospect to come along and he might very well be the best ever so he is definitely worthy of this high of a pick and could eventually rank among the leagues premier players at the position. Mike Nolan would also love to add a big, physical defensive back so Michael Huff will be extremely tempting and linebacker is among their greatest needs so A.J. Hawk would make a ton of sense if he's available as well.

7. OAKLAND RAIDERS
VINCE YOUNG QB Texas Scouting Report
Anyone who has watched the NFL Draft on television for a number of years knows there is always one big storyline to follow in round one and this year's might very well end up being Vince Young. Right now there is such a wide array of opinions on him as a prospect that he could easily go as high as #3 overall to the Titans but there are also scenarios in which he could fall as far as #13 to Baltimore. In the end the truth might lie somewhere in between with Oakland and Arizona as two likely final destinations for the talented yet unpolished signal caller. There is simply no denying Vince Young's potential and he probably has as high of an upside as any prospect that has come along in the last 10 years. Unfortunately he also has a major downside and is just as likely to be a bust of epic proportions as he is to turn into a transcendent star. There is always risk when it comes to the NFL Draft, it just so happens that in Young's case the stakes are as high as ever. A phenomenal athlete with excellent size and running abilities, Young is able to do things on the football field that others don't dare dream of. However he is also extremely raw as a passer, has an unconventional delivery, struggles to read defenses, lacks great arm strength and will likely need to sit and learn for a year or two before he is ready to play in the NFL. This is a team with many needs though and they could easily go in a number of other different directions with this pick with Jay Cutler, Vernon Davis, Haloti Ngata and Michael Huff all being legitimate options among the players still left on the board but in the end Al Davis is just unable to pass on bringing in Young to develop as their long-term solution at quarterback.

8. BUFFALO BILLS
WINSTON JUSTICE OT Southern Cal Scouting Report
When you think about it there might not be any team better situated in the draft than the Buffalo Bills. Despite not having one of the first few picks they are in a perfect spot to address one of their two most glaring needs with an exciting young prospect. Jonas Jennings was lost as a free agent last offseason and by the end of the 2005 campaign the Bills were relegated to starting a journeyman in Mike Gandy at the critical left tackle position and a converted tight end and undrafted free agent in Jason Peters at right tackle. To say that was not an ideal situation would be putting it mildly so if they have an opportunity to bring in a premier offensive tackle they need to jump at it. Winston Justice is still raw and might have some maturity issues but there is no denying his athleticism and potential, which are both off the charts. Even though he played right tackle with the Trojans he could play either side at the pro level and after some extraordinary workouts he is without question the #2 offensive linemen in this draft and probably a Top 10 overall pick. Last offseason Pat Williams was lost in free agency, which turned out to be a bigger loss than even they imagined, and this year Sam Adams was jettisoned as well leaving two massive (no pun intended) holes in the middle of their defensive line. Even though Larry Tripplett was brought in there is still one spot left to fill and either Brodrick Bunkley or Haloti Ngata would be good fits here. Two other options to keep an eye on are Vernon Davis and Michael Huff, who the team has interest in and both of which would be major upgrades.

9. DETROIT LIONS
MICHAEL HUFF S Texas Scouting Report
After devoting so many of their recent top draft picks to the offense and the likes of Joey Harrington, Charles Rogers, Roy Williams, Kevin Jones and Mike Williams it is high time they turn their attention to the other side of the ball. One area that is a problem is the secondary, where they really don't have a great player opposite of Dre' Bly at cornerback and Terrence Holt is very average at free safety. Michael Huff has the size and speed to project to either position at the next level and has been one of the most productive defensive backs in the country for years now. There is a strong chance that he could be gone by this point but if he is still available it would seem to be a perfect fit for both player and team. Remember, back in 2002 there was talk right up until they made the pick that some in the organization preferred Quentin Jammer over Joey Harrington so this is their second chance to land a top Longhorn defensive back. The offensive line is also somewhat of a concern, especially the right side where Kelly Butler showed some promise last season but can definitely be upgraded so a guy like Winston Justice could interest them as well. One other option is linebacker because, depending on where Teddy Lehman ultimately ends up, they might have a need either inside or outside and with new head coach Rod Marinelli coming from the Tampa Bay organization he could become intrigued by a Derrick Brooks-esque prospect like Ernie Sims. They definitely won't pick a wideout though. Or will they?

10. ARIZONA CARDINALS
JAY CUTLER QB Vanderbilt Scouting Report
There is no doubt that Kurt Warner did a respectable job last year and resurrected his career to a degree but the fact remains that he isn't getting any younger and with Josh McCown leaving as a free agent the need to bring in a quarterback of the future is all that much more glaring. Every year we see a player who makes a major surge up draft boards after the season ends and there is no question that Cutler is that guy this time around. Teams and scouts have fallen in love with Cutler's size, arm, mobility and intangibles and even though he received very little in the way of national media exposure while playing for perennial loser Vandy and never even led his team to a bowl game there is a chance he could go as high as #4 overall. Personally I think that this is a reach and while I like him I certainly did not see a Top 10 overall pick throughout the week down in Mobile at the Senior Bowl practices. In fact I compare him favorably to J.P. Losman, which is not necessarily a bad thing because I haven't written him off in Buffalo yet, but Losman was the 22nd overall pick in round one, not #10. Arizona could also use a top safety in their secondary, a premier tight end like Vernon Davis would have to interest them and with their horrible offensive line you could make a case for a guy like Winston Justice but they probably can't afford to pass on a signal caller considering their backup right now is John Navarre. This is actually a good situation for Cutler as he will be able to sit and learn for a couple of years and smooth out his mechanics rather than being thrown into the fire as a starter from the start.

11. ST. LOUIS RAMS
TYE HILL CB Clemson Scouting Report
There is an old saying in football that says if you have a lot you probably have nothing and that is probably the case at cornerback for the Rams. Even though St. Louis has a number of solid players such as Travis Fisher, Jerametrius Butler, Ronald Bartell and DeJuan Groce it is more of a case of quantity over quality and they really need a difference maker at the position. Some might consider taking Tye Hill this high a bit of a stretch and while that might very well be the case it's not a drastic reach by any means. Even though he doesn't have the ideal size you look for Hill has a very solid build and plays like a guy who is much bigger and when you factor in that he is also one of the fastest players in the entire draft it becomes a scary combination. Last year his teammate Justin Miller was a 2nd round pick who ended up starting for the Jets as a rookie and Hill is a much better prospect. Tight end is also a need and new head coach Scott Linehan would love to replace Brandon Manumaleuna with a pass catching threat so if Vernon Davis managed to fall this far he'd probably be too good to pass up. After suffering a number of losses along the defensive line in free agency the past few years (Grant Wistrom, Bryce Fisher, Ryan Pickett, Damione Lewis) that might be an area they would look to address as well but the safe money is on them using this selection on Davis or an impact player in the secondary and this pick will finally give them the top cover man they've been lacking since the days of Aeneas Williams.

12. CLEVELAND BROWNS
HALOTI NGATA DT Oregon Scouting Report
This is a dream scenario for the Cleveland Browns and even though they signed Ted Washington don't think for a second that they wouldn't absolutely jump at the chance to add Haloti Ngata if he somehow fell into their laps and in fact they all but said that was the case during an interview at the Scouting Combine in February. There is something in football called the "Planet Theory" which essentially says that there are only so many people on the planet who have a certain rare blend of size, speed and athleticism and when George Young and Bill Parcells coined that term they might as well have been talking about Ngata. An imposing physical presence at 6-4 and almost 340 lbs., Ngata needs to develop a more consistent motor but when he is on he's capable of being one of the elite nose tackles in the business and would a perfect fit for the Browns 3-4 defense. If Ngata is gone Brodrick Bunkley would get some consideration but the team really wants to add an impact pass rushing outside linebacker and a guy they are said to be extremely high on is Kamerion Wimbley of Florida St. so if Ngata is off the board look for him to be the pick. Whichever way you look at it though this pick will almost assuredly be spent on a stud defender and while all the available information seems to strongly point towards them targeting a pass rusher they simply can't and won't pass on Ngata, who would give their defense an anchor to build around and he could be their own version of Casey Hampton, Jamal Williams.

13. BALTIMORE RAVENS
BRODRICK BUNKLEY DT Florida St. Scouting Report
Even though Kyle Boller showed some flashes down the stretch last year what the Ravens would really like to do is add a top young quarterback so if Cutler or Young somehow fell into their laps this decision would be an easy one. That isn't the case however so they turn their attention to the defensive line. Underrated defensive tackle Ma'ake Kemoeatu was lost as a free agent and while they did sign Justin Bannan and still have Kelly Gregg what they lack is a difference maker in the middle so this pick would make sense. Even though he wasn't widely talked about you can rest assured that scouts have known about Bunkley for a long time and he had one of the best seasons of any defensive tackle in the country as a senior. Bunkley is able to penetrate and make plays in the backfield but even though he doesn't have great bulk he is also stout at the point and can occupy multiple blockers and gaps as well. The Ravens offensive line was a major disappointment last season and with Orlando Brown gone they could use a top right tackle so if Winston Justice fell into their laps he'd likely garner strong consideration and the secondary is also a concern with Will Demps leaving as a free agent and Deion Sanders retiring the team is in the market for a new starter at free safety as well as some depth at cornerback. Baltimore is an interesting team to project because there are so many directions they could potentially go but Bunkley is the best value still on the board and would be a major upgrade.

14. PHILADELPHIA EAGLES
CHAD GREENWAY OLB Iowa Scouting Report
After so many years of dominating the NFC injuries and off-the-field turmoil (i.e. Owens, Terrell) brought this franchise back to earth a bit in 2005. The good news though is that they have eliminated the distractions and with players such as Donovan McNabb healthy they could be primed to bounce back in a big way next season. One area where the team needs to bring in help is at linebacker where Dhani Jones disappointed last season and Keith Adams is a free agent so if they have the chance to bring in someone who can help them in the coverage aspect of the position they might just jump at it. Heading into his senior season Chad Greenway was ranked on par with, and by some even higher, than A.J. Hawk but his play dropped off a bit and while there has been talk that his stock is dropping due to sub par workouts the odds are he won't get out of the Top 15-20 overall picks. One thing that can't be overlooked here are the intangibles that he brings to the table and after a year of dealing with Terrell Owens a guy like Greenway with his team-first attitude and leadership qualities probably looks pretty good to this franchise. Darren Howard was brought in as a free agent which will shore up the defensive end position but the interior of the line is still a concern with Darwin Walker and Hollis Thomas coming off very disappointing campaigns so Brodrick Bunkley would make some sense if he is available as well. Wide receiver can't be completely ruled out either and also keep an eye on Winston Justice, who the team is said to really like and have been scouting.

15. DENVER BRONCOS (f/ATL)
CHAD JACKSON WR Florida Scouting Report
The Broncos somehow managed to work their way into the Jets / Falcons deal for John Abraham and in the process were able to jump up 14 spots in the first round at the cost of only a couple of mid-round picks. The question now becomes what are the Broncos up to as they surely had something in mind when making the deal. One obvious interpretation would be their desire to get ahead of the Miami Dolphins at #16 so they could take Chad Jackson, who is said to be coveted by both teams. Rod Smith is still very productive but he can't play forever and while Ashley Lelie has showed signs of being a capable #2 option he is not the future so those factors coupled with little or no depth at the position makes it easy to see why they would be so interested in adding a top talent at wideout. Chad Jackson was a highly-touted prep recruit who finally lived up to his enormous potential as a junior this past season and that, coupled with his outstanding showing at the Combine where he ran a 4.32, has sent his stock soaring, a la Troy Williamson a year ago. Some might point to his paltry 10.2 yard average per catch as a negative but that was largely a product of Urban Meyer's offensive scheme and Jackson showed that he could be a vertical threat in 2004 when his average per reception was a sterling 22.4 yards. There has been talk that the Broncos might be gearing up to package the #15 and #22 picks to move up for a quarterback but I think the more likely scenario would be for them to target Vernon Davis, who would replace the recently departed Jeb Putzier and give them the type of dynamic weapon at tight end that they haven't had since Shannon Sharpe was in his prime.

16. MIAMI DOLPHINS
JASON ALLEN S Tennessee Scouting Report
If ever there was a case to demonstrate what good coaching can do for a team it might be the 2005 Miami Dolphins, who Nick Saban turned around and had playing like a contender down the stretch. While you can't say enough for the job he has done so far there is still plenty of work to do and one area that they could desperately used some help is the secondary, most notably at safety. Both of last years starters are now gone leaving only Travares Tillman and Renaldo Hill in their place, which isn't exactly an ideal situation. Jason Allen almost entered the draft early a year ago but opted to return for his season before unfortunately dislocating his hip in October, which for a defensive back is akin to a shoulder injury for a quarterback. Prior to the injury Allen was considered a definite first rounder but obviously saw his stock slip with the uncertainty however now that he has worked out well and proven to be healthy he is once again firmly in the round one mix. Able to play either cornerback or safety and with starting experience at both positions, Allen is just the type of versatile athlete this team is looking for in the secondary and you can bet that Saban is familiar with him from his days in the SEC. Another area where the team would like to improve is wide receiver where, beyond Chris Chambers and Marty Booker, there is very little depth and a guy who is said to interest them is Chad Jackson if he is still available. With Junior Seau gone don't rule out a linebacker either because even though Sedrick Hodge was signed as a free agent he is nothing more than an average starter at best and there is very little depth at any of the three spots so they could go that direction as well.

17. MINNESOTA VIKINGS
ERNIE SIMS OLB Florida St. Scouting Report
With more cap room than anybody heading into free agency the Vikings new front office has been very busy this offseason, plugging holes left and right. One area they have yet to really address sufficiently though is linebacker which makes that a potential target for this pick. Brad Childress plucked his new defensive coordinator Mike Tomlin from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers staff and you can bet that he understands just how integral of a role Derrick Brooks played in helping that famed Cover 2 scheme run to perfection. With that said it isn't hard to imagine them jumping at the chance to add Ernie Sims, who brings many of the same qualities to the table that Brooks does. Sims only checks in at 5-11 and 230 lbs. but he plays and hits like a guy who is much bigger and compensates for that lack of ideal size with outstanding speed and athleticism. Even more important though is his playmaking ability and when you watch Florida St. film #34 continually flashes all over the screen, seemingly in on every stop. Sims has seen his stock soar in recent weeks though and there is a chance he might not be available here but if he is it sure looks like a match made in NFL Draft Heaven. The other situation to watch out for with the Vikings is a trade up for one of the top three quarterbacks and with a number of extra first days picks the team has plenty of ammo to make a move for Daunte Culpepper's long-term replacement if they so choose. Matt Leinart is probably out of their reach but Vince Young and Jay Cutler are realistic options, especially if one starts to fall toward the latter part of the Top 10.

18. DALLAS COWBOYS
DONTE WHITNER S Ohio St. Scouting Report
This was basically a coin-flip between two Buckeye prospects but in the end Donte Whitner gets the call over Santonio Holmes. After addressing their need at right tackle by signing Jason Fabini the Cowboys biggest need is now a top free safety to play alongside Roy Williams. Whitner has flown under the radar to a degree but looks to be firmly in the first round and is being viewed by scouts as a guy who could potentially play either safety or cornerback at the pro level. A ballhawk with a knack for making the big play, Whitner would be an ideal fit in Dallas although Jason Allen and Jimmy Williams could draw consideration as well. I know a lot of Cowboy fans don't think this pick will be used on a receiver but rest assured it is very possible, even after the Terrell Owens signing. T.O. is nothing short of a time bomb and he has already ruffled some feathers in Big D by announcing his upcoming book release so there is little doubt that he can't be depended on and whether he is with the Cowboys for one year or three they need to have a backup plan in place. Also, since Keyshawn Johnson was released there is very little depth behind Owens and Terry Glenn and the team really wants to add a young, explosive playmaker like Holmes outside. The other area they could look to is linebacker where they have a need outside and if that is the route they want to go names like Kamerion Wimbley, Chad Greenway and Bobby Carpenter will come into play. Ultimately this comes down to a battle between offense and defense though and while they could go either direction in the end Parcells wants defense.

19. SAN DIEGO CHARGERS
SANTONIO HOLMES WR Ohio St. Scouting Report
Very few teams do as good of a job scouting and developing their own talent as the Chargers and right now they have 15 players that they drafted starting for them, and that doesn't include Antonio Gates and Kris Dielman who they signed as undrafted free agents. For those who are counting that's 17 homegrown starters, which is pretty amazing no matter how you cut it! For years now the Chargers have had a solid core of wide receivers with Keenan McCardell, Eric Parker and youngster Vincent Jackson but they lack that true #1 stud so if Santonio Holmes or Chad Jackson fell to them this might finally be the year that they address that situation. Even though he isn't the biggest receiver out there or even the fastest Holmes is a big play threat who will also do all the little things such as block and run good routes. Despite having one of the top young defenses in the league one area where they are still lacking is in the secondary and they don't have a true ballhawk who can make big plays. In recent years the team has invested a number of high draft picks in the likes of Quentin Jammer, Sammy Davis, Drayton Florence and Terrence Kiel but still lack a true difference maker in the deep patrol so that might be a direction they look to here, with Donte Whitner appearing to be an ideal fit if available but Jason Allen and Jimmy Williams being two other possibilities. Another area the Chargers would love to upgrade is along the offensive line where Roman Oben isn't getting any younger on the left side and Shane Olivea is solid but not outstanding on the right so that is also a possibility.

20. KANSAS CITY CHIEFS
JONATHAN JOSEPH CB South Carolina Scouting Report
Last offseason the Chiefs battle cry was "Defense, Defense, Defense" and after spending most of their free agency and draft resources on that side of the ball improvements were made. However there is still a lot of work to be done and they need one more effort like that if they hope to get their "D" to the point where it can hold up it's end of the bargain with their powerful offense. You can really make a case for them taking a defensive linemen here and in all reality that is probably their most glaring need but with the value not being quite up to par at this point they opt instead for a cornerback, which is also a problem area. Even though Ko Simpson got the majority of the attention in the Gamecocks secondary it now appears that Joseph will be chosen first after his showing at the Scouting Combine in which he blazed a 4.31 time in the forty. A JUCO transfer, Joseph only played in two games in 2004 before going down with an injury so 2005 was basically his only year of experience at the Division I level but that was enough for him to display everything you look for in a top young cover guy. Kansas City could also use a premier defensive tackle so Brodrick Bunkley would be an ideal fit if he fell this far and they wouldn't mind adding a top end to play opposite of Jared Allen either so watch out for Kamerion Wimbley as well. As always even though they have been very productive the Chiefs still don't have an elite wide receiver so Chad Jackson and Santonio Holmes would at least tempt them here but in the end they simply can't afford to look in any direction other than defense.

21. NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS
RICHARD MARSHALL CB Fresno St. Scouting Report
For the second year in a row now this is a team that has a need at cornerback and while they didn't sufficiently replace Ty Law a year ago that won't be the case this time around. One thing the New England franchise and Scott Pioli do better than just about anyone else in the league is draft players who fit their system. Last year was a classic example when they reached a little bit for Logan Mankins in round one because they knew he would mesh in well with what they do and as a result he became almost an immediate starter for them as a rookie. Most know that Bill Belichick has close ties with the Fresno St. program due to his relationship with their coach Pat Hill so he is very comfortable taking Bulldog prospects because he knows they have played in a similar system and will assimilate well. Richard Marshall is an underrated player who is just beginning to get the attention he deserves as one of the top cornerback prospects in this draft and New England is said to have a lot of interest in him. While this might be a slight reach the team won't have a shot at him in round two so it's better to pull the trigger a little too soon rather than gamble and lose him. Linebacker has become a major concern for the Patriots as well with age, injuries, and the salary cap really hitting them hard in recent years so that is a possible option here with Kamerion Wimbley and Bobby Carpenter seeming to be good fits. Don't rule out a running back either because with Corey Dillon getting up their in years it sure wouldn't hurt to bring in DeAngelo Williams or Laurence Maroney as both a backup and long-term replacement.

22. DENVER BRONCOS (f/WAS)
DEANGELO WILLIAMS RB Memphis Scouting Report
A year ago the Redskins wanted to acquire an additional first round pick so they could select quarterback Jason Campbell and the Broncos were only too happy to oblige but in return Washington had to give up this years #1. Historically the Broncos have not used first round picks on running backs but with only Ron Dayne and Tatum Bell as their top two options that could very well change, especially if a top runner fell into their laps. Based on talent there is no way DeAngelo Williams should fall this far but when you factor in that running backs tend to drop a bit and that there really aren't many teams in dire need of a running back it is very possible. One of the most productive running backs in NCAA history, Williams doesn't have overwhelming size or pure speed but he is a natural runner with great vision and instincts not to mention top-notch intangibles. Laurence Maroney could also be an option and he would be a great fit for their offense, having played in a similar zone-blocking scheme in college. Defensive end is also an area the team would like to address, which was evidenced by their interest in trading for John Abraham earlier in the offseason, so they could look in that direction here. Don't rule out Mike Shanahan packaging both of his first rounders in an effort to move up either and there is even an outside chance that the team could do what they did last year which is trade this choice for a 2007 first round pick to save some cap space and also accumulate future assets. With this being basically a luxury selection the Broncos can go a number of directions but Williams is without a doubt the best value and he would solidify their running back situation for many years to come.

23. TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS
JIMMY WILLIAMS CB Virginia Tech Scouting Report
For years now the Buccaneers have had one of the best starting cornerback duos in the league with Ronde Barber and Brian Kelly but as of now there is little or no depth behind them and that could be a problem. Jimmy Williams has great size, is very athletic and runs well but even though he has the measurables of a cornerback he has maintained the demeanor of a safety, which he played early in his career, when it comes to style of play and is still very physical. Williams would be an ideal fit at corner in the Bucs Cover 2 defensive scheme and give them the depth they need while also providing a long-term starting option for when the time comes to replace either Barber or Kelly. The offensive line could also stand to be upgraded with only former undrafted free agent Anthony Davis starting at left tackle and frequent inhabitant of Jon Gruden's doghouse Kenyatta Walker on the right side. Someone like Marcus McNeill, who the team is obviously familiar with having chosen Cadillac Williams from the same program a year ago, would be an interesting option for them while Eric Winston is a possibility as well. Keep an eye on wide receiver though too since Michael Clayton is coming off of a very disappointing sophomore campaign and Joey Galloway is getting up there in years, not to mention there is very little depth behind them other than Ike Hilliard. In the end Williams is just too talented and too good of a fit to pass up at this point so he is their pick, which could eventually turn out to be quite a steal.

24. CINCINNATI BENGALS
KAMERION WIMBLEY DE Florida St. Scouting Report
The Bengals already boast one of the most explosive young offenses in the league so it is time they get the defense, which is Marvin Lewis' specialty, caught up to speed and a top pass rusher like Wimbley is just the ticket. This team is a classic case of how needs can change between the end of the season and the draft. After addressing two of their most pressing concerns at safety and defensive tackle in free agency the Bengals now have more leeway in terms of what direction they go with this choice and might not necessarily be locked into one or two positions. If the team ultimately chooses to make the switch to a 3-4 defense this pick will make even more sense since Wimbley would be an ideal outside linebacker in that scheme but even if they stay with a 4-3 they want to add an impact pass rusher outside. This is actually a little low for Kamerion Wimbley because there is a strong chance that he could go as high as #12 overall to Cleveland and at worst he is widely considered to be a Top 20 overall pick so to land him here would be a good value. With Matt Schobel moving on as a free agent and Reggie Kelly slated to hit the open market next offseason a premier tight end is needed as well so Marcedes Lewis and Leonard Pope could draw serious interest from Cincy here as well. One other option would be a versatile defensive back and someone like Donte Whitner, who could help out at both safety and cornerback, would be a great fit if he were still available at this point but even if he is gone there should be plenty of value left in the secondary if that is the route they ultimately wanted to go.

25. NEW YORK GIANTS
GABE WATSON DT Michigan Scouting Report
This past season the G-Men, led by Eli Manning, emerged as one of the top young offenses in the league and they look set on that side of the ball for the most part but the defense still needs some work. Even before losing the underrated Kendrick Clancy as a free agent the team lacked a true difference maker on the interior so it is important that they bring in a stud in the middle at some point, preferably a big space-eater. From a measurables standpoint Gabe Watson has everything you look for and had he played up to that potential as a senior he might have been a Top 10 overall pick but as it stands he will likely still be available here. In Mobile at the Senior Bowl Watson was seemingly trying to make up for his poor showing in 2005 all in one week and he almost did it, absolutely dominating the competition to the point where Jeff Fisher noted that they considered keeping him on the sidelines so they could get some work done on the interior in practice. He was only half joking. If anyone can get the best out of Watson though it is Tom Coughlin so he is worth the risk at this point in round one. At linebacker New York was ravaged by injuries down the stretch last year and their lack of depth became quite apparent so they could look to bring in a top youngster like Bobby Carpenter, Thomas Howard or DeMeco Ryans. Don't rule out a wide receiver either because even though their starting combo of Plaxico Burress and Amani Toomer are more than adequate they really have very little in terms of depth and could use a premier deep threat like Sinorice Moss to stretch the field and open things up.

26. CHICAGO BEARS
KELLY JENNINGS CB Miami (FL) Scouting Report
Some may wonder why the Bears would use this pick on a cornerback when they already have one of the best defenses in the league but the reason they are so dominant on that side of the ball is because that is where they choose to expend the majority of their resources. With Jerry Azumah retiring and Charles Tillman severely regressing late in the season the team needs to add some reinforcements at corner and Jennings would be a solid pick at this point in round one. While he hasn't gotten the attention or hype that other recent Hurricane defensive back prospects have Kelly Jennings is a solid and very experienced pure cover guy who is widely considered to be a legitimate first round pick by scouts. An excellent athlete with great speed and very fluid hips, Jennings would be able to step in and contribute immediately as a nickel back in the Bears secondary and solidify what became a problem area down the stretch last season. If they do opt to help out their offense, which is very possibly, one area they might look to is wide receiver because despite widespread speculation that they would sign Antwaan Randle El in free agency they failed to do so. Da Bears still need a deep threat who can also help out on special teams in the return game which could make someone like Sinorice Moss a strong possibility. It also wouldn't hurt to add a top young pass catching tight end and there should be plenty of value left in the form of Marcedes Lewis and Leonard Pope if they want to go that route but as always with this franchise it is all about the defense so cornerback is the way they go.

27. CAROLINA PANTHERS
DEMECO RYANS OLB Alabama Scouting Report
Both the defensive line and secondary of the Carolina Panthers rank among the best in the league but their linebacking corps leaves a lot to be desired. The underrated Will Witherspoon bolted as a free agent and Brandon Short is still on the market as well which means that even if last years first round pick Thomas Davis is moved there is still a hole at one of the starting spots. The team is said to like youngster Adam Seward but he was a 5th round pick and I'm not sure a team with Super Bowl aspirations will want to go into a season with him and Davis starting alongside Dan Morgan so reinforcements are needed. DeMeco Ryans was one of the most productive linebackers in college football throughout his career but his stock has dropped a bit due to a lack of ideal physical tools, however what he lacks in measurables he more than makes up for with intangibles such as football instincts and leadership, not to mention the versatility to potentially play any of the three linebacker spots at the pro level. With Stephen Davis now gone, Eric Shelton coming off of an injury and DeShaun Foster unable to stay healthy running back is somewhat of a concern and a guy like LenDale White could also interest the Panthers. Last offseason the team signed Freddie Jones but he abruptly retired before the season and while some may say that the Panthers offense doesn't utilize the tight end position much one may counter that it's because they haven't had a true pass catching threat at the position since the old days of Wesley Walls so that could be a direction they look to here as well.

28. JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS
THOMAS HOWARD OLB U.T.E.P. Scouting Report
In the past two drafts the Jags have used their first round picks on big receivers so it is likely time that they turn their attention to the other side of the ball. Last season the team was very unhappy with the performances of outside linebackers Daryl Smith and Akin Ayodele and while Smith is still young and will get another shot they weren't too upset to see Ayodele bolt to Dallas in free agency. However that does leave a big hole on the strongside and they will probably be looking to fill it in the draft. One player they are said to be interested in is Thomas Howard, who is among the fastest and most athletic players you will ever find at the position. Howard began his career with the Miners as a safety but eventually developed into one of the top linebackers in the country and he would be an ideal fit for Jacksonville at this point in round one. Another position they could be looking to address here is tight end, where Kyle Brady is nearing the end of his career and provides little as a pass catcher while George Wrighster has never developed as they had hoped. If they do indeed want to grab a tight end here there should be a lot of value on the board with Marcedes Lewis and Leonard Pope being two guys who would provide the type of impact threat in the passing game that they have been craving. Keep an eye on the offensive line as well because the team was unhappy with the performances of Vince Manuwai and Chris Naeole and they could very well be in the market for an upgrade at guard.

29. NEW YORK JETS (f/DEN/ATL)
BOBBY CARPENTER OLB Ohio St. Scouting Report
After a couple of offseasons of turmoil the Jets were finally able to deal franchised defensive end John Abraham and this is the pick they received in exchange. For a team with as many needs as the Jets an extra first round pick is just what the doctor ordered, especially in a draft that features so much depth and value right around this area. As I said this is a team with no shortage of problems and they could literally go a half dozen different directions with this pick but after using their initial choice on the offensive side of the ball new head coach Eric Mangini will likely be looking to address his new 3-4 defense. Throughout his career Bobby Carpenter was always overshadowed by A.J. Hawk but that isn't the case anymore and he has now emerged as a legitimate first round prospect in his own right. A great athlete with ideal size and good speed, Carpenter is also extremely versatile and is such a good blitzer that the Buckeyes even used him in a three-point stance as a pass rushing defensive end at times. In other words he will be a perfect fit at outside linebacker in the 3-4 and you can bet that he'll remind Mangini of a guy he had in New England by the name of Mike Vrabel. Another strong consideration here will be center and Nick Mangold would make a lot of sense for them since Kevin Mawae was released earlier in the offseason. With Ty Law moving on after just one season the secondary is a concern as well and there should be a nice group of top cornerbacks still available late in round one if they wanted to go that route but in the end Carpenter is just entirely too good of a fit.

30. INDIANAPOLIS COLTS
LAURENCE MARONEY RB Minnesota Scouting Report
There might not be a team that was hit harder by free agency than the Colts, who lost three starters in Edgerrin James, Larry Tripplett and David Thornton. Without question though their biggest need now becomes running back, where James was an integral part of that prolific offense. The good news however is that it is looking more and more likely that at least one of the big four running backs will fall into their laps here and Maroney is reportedly the guy they want, with team President Bill Polian scouting him personally at the Music City Bowl. Laurence Maroney was extremely productive in the Gophers high-powered rushing attack and a big play threat who is capable of taking it 80 yards to the house on any given play. One other name to keep an eye on here is Joseph Addai of L.S.U. who, like James, can be a multi-purpose threat as a runner and receiver and has seen his stock rise after a strong showing at the Scouting Combine to the point where he is now a legitimate late first round possibility. As I said defensive tackle and linebacker are also big problems now and there should still be ample value left at both positions at this point if they do indeed choose to go that route with names like Thomas Howard, DeMeco Ryans, Claude Wroten and John McCargo all entering the equation as possibilities here. In the end though they simply can't afford to pass on a running back, especially when their bread has been buttered on the offensive side of the ball for so many years now. In 1999 they lost Marshall Faulk and added Edgerrin James so now in 2006 they lose James and add Maroney.

31. SEATTLE SEAHAWKS
ANTONIO CROMARTIE CB Florida St. Scouting Report
After years of underachieving the Seahawks finally took that next step in 2005 and even made the Super Bowl before ultimately losing to the Steelers. Even though they played in the big game that doesn't mean they don't have needs and one of the biggest is at cornerback. They are solid at one spot with youngster Marcus Trufant but outside of that they lack a lot of quality and the depth leaves a lot to be desired. After selecting Michael Boulware from the Seminole program a couple of years ago the Seahawks dip back into that Florida St. talent pool for Cromartie, who is one of the more intriguing prospects in this entire draft. A phenomenal talent with rare measurables and athletic ability, Cromartie entered the draft early even though he is coming off of a torn ACL and did not play at all in 2005. He is healthy now and worked out well so there is no denying the potential and had he gone back to school for his senior season he might very well have been a Top 5 overall pick in 2007. Defensive end is also a position the team would like to upgrade, which was evidenced by their failed attempt to trade for John Abraham, so Tamba Hali, Mathias Kiwanuka and Manny Lawson could all garner interest here while they could also be looking to replace All-Pro guard Steve Hutchinson as well. Cornerback is their biggest need though and there should be some excellent value still on the board in the latter portion of round one and early part of round two but at this point nobody offers as much upside as Cromartie, who could develop into a elite shutdown cover corner like Champ Bailey at the pro level one day.

32. PITTSBURGH STEELERS
LENDALE WHITE RB Southern Cal Scouting Report
In today's NFL even the best team in the league has holes to fill when it comes to the draft and there are really a number of directions the Steelers could go here. Throughout the years one thing the Pittsburgh franchise has always been known for is a powerful running game but with Jerome Bettis having retired that has now become a question mark. Enter LenDale White who even though he checks in at more than 230 lbs. has excellent feet, a la Bettis. Most probably don't realize this but White averaged more than 1,000 yards and 17 touchdowns over his three year career with the Trojans and while Reggie Bush scored 25 times over his career White got into the endzone 24 times just this past season alone. Quite impressive indeed! Another problem area is free safety where Chris Hope was lost as a free agent and even though Ryan Clark was brought in he is merely a journeyman and more of a backup so keep an eye on Daniel Bullocks here as well. Wide receiver is also a big concern for this team after losing both Plaxico Burress and Antwaan Randle El as free agents in back-to-back years so it is time to add a top youngster with Sinorice Moss making a lot of sense. The center position could become an issue soon so Nick Mangold could be a long-term option and you can never rule out a top linebacker for their 3-4 either. It doesn't take much of an imagination to see what a perfect fit this would be for both player and team should it happen though and it is becoming increasing more plausible with White continuing to anger scouts and teams with his attitude and conditioning at every turn.
