Packers - Broncos Game Will Not Be Moved

With the Colorado Rockies leading the National League Championship Series 3-0, it's a near certainty that Game 5 of the World Series and the Monday Night Football game between the Denver Broncos and Green Bay Packers will both be played in the same city on the same night.

And it's going to stay that way.

"We have no plans to change the time of the game," said Greg Aiello, the NFL's Vice President of public relations. "There are no facility or parking issues. The stadiums are in different parts of town."

The American League has home-field advantage in the World Series based on its All-Star Game victory. As a result, Games 3-5 of the World Series will be played in the ballpark of the National League champion. Those games are scheduled to take place Oct. 27-29.

Times of the World Series games have yet to be announced. The Packers-Broncos game is scheduled to kickoff at 7:30 p.m. central time.

Having a World Series game and a Monday Night Football game in the same area on the same night is not unprecedented. Game 7 of the 1986 World Series between the New York Mets and Boston Red Sox was played at Shea Stadium on Oct. 27, 1986. At the same time, the New York Giants were playing the Washington Redskins in East Rutherford, N.J.

That is believed to be the only time the two have conflicted in the same area at different stadiums. However, Game 7 of the '86 World Series was originally scheduled for Oct. 26 and was postponed due to rain until the following night.

When the 1997 World Series between the Florida Marlins and Cleveland Indians was pushed to a Game 7, the NFL postponed the scheduled 1 p.m. Sunday game between the Dolphins and Bears to 9 p.m. Monday. Same scenario took place during the 1987 World Series between the Minnesota Twins and St. Louis Cardinals, when the Broncos-Vikings game was moved from Sunday to Monday night.

Both the Marlins and Twins share the same stadium as their city's baseball teams.

As part of their usual deference to the World Series, there is not a Sunday Night Football game scheduled for Oct. 28.

"Baseball made a change this year in scheduling a World Series game on a Monday night," Aiello said.

According to a network source, it is not a coincidence that the NFL chose the Broncos and Packers, two historically successful teams with fervent fan bases, to go head-to-head with a World Series game.
