Road Only Gets Tougher for Inconsistent Denver Broncos
Sept. 25 2007
Despite their 2-1 record, the Denver Broncos have yet to get their act together. It isn't likely to get any easier.
Starting with Sunday's game against the Colts in the RCA Dome, the Broncos face a daunting five-game stretch. After Indy (3-0), they entertain San Diego (1-2), Pittsburgh (3-0) and Green Bay (3-0) before traveling to Detroit (2-1).
Denver eked out wins in its first two games against the Bills (15-14) and Oakland Raiders (23-20 in overtime) on the strength of dramatic Jason Elam field goals. Then the Broncos were run out of their home field Sunday by Jacksonville 23-14.
"We can't ignore what's gone wrong,'' defensive end Elvis Dumervil told reporters after the loss to Jacksonville . "You look at it and you go to work and try to get better. I don't know what else you can do.''
Here are some story lines to follow heading into Sunday's game:
Cutting edge: Quarterback Jay Cutler, who was born in Santa Claus, Ind. , and starred at Heritage Hills High School , returns to the Hoosier state. If a mild ankle sprain suffered against the Jaguars allows, that is. Cutler is off to a modest start, ranking 20th in the league with an 84.3 rating. He has directed the Broncos to just five touchdowns in three games.
Another reunion: Another week, another ex-Colts player to highlight. Sunday, it will be wide receiver Brandon Stokley, who signed with the Broncos as a free agent in March after the Colts terminated his contract. Stokley is Denver 's third-leading receiver with nine catches for 144 yards and one touchdown. The Colts already have faced three players who were with the team last season: cornerbacks Jason David ( New Orleans ) and Nick Harper ( Tennessee ) and linebacker Gilbert Gardner ( Tennessee ).
Run, run, run: Suddenly, the Broncos are powerless to stop the run. They're tied for 29th in the league, allowing 166 yards per game. Jacksonville dominated time of possession (38:42-21:18) in large part because it ran 47 times for 186 yards. The week before, Oakland gouged the Broncos for 200 rushing yards. That would seem to bode well for Joseph Addai, who is averaging 90.3 yards per game and 4.2 per attempt.
Lynch ailing: The Broncos' reeling defense might be without safety John Lynch. The eight-time Pro Bowl selection did not return against Jacksonville after suffering a groin injury in the second quarter.
