I was checking the news yesterday on Yahoo and there was a headline saying : "Bell named starter by Broncos". It didn't strike me as odd because Tatum Bell is the Broncos # 1 back, so this isn't really news. But, turns out that it's Mike Bell, an undrafted rookie out of Arizona that was named the starter for the first preseason game.
You might wonder what the hell Mike Shanahan is thinking but it doesn't really matter. Denver could put David Wells in the backfield and he'll run for 1400 yards and 12 Td's.
The only way that you don't run for 1000 yards for the Broncos is if you're Maurice Clarett.
I can't speak to this enough. Maurice Clarett is not news. Nothing that he does is newsworthy.
Sure, he is a troubled person, driving around with four loaded guns, with some weaponry that looked like he could double as the character in Grand Theft Auto, a half drank bottle of Grey Goose, and here's the one I really love, wearing a bullet proof vest. That was classic, even rendering the police tasers useless. Choice move there.
And while this is a troubling human story about a man gone wrong in his choices that graduated from taking inappropriate moneys from an Ohio State booster to allegedly robbing two patrons outside a bar in Columbus. Now he really goes for it and leads a police chase in a car holding artillery that would make Dubya proud. (President Bush, it the W didn't work for you.)
So his bail is set at $5 million, but let me get something straight. Why is this guy newsworthy?? Oh, right, HE'S NOT.
To take everyone back in history, Clarett was Ohio State's star running back on its 2002 National Championship team, basically leading the team because quarterback Craig Krenzel was half a joke. Not to take anything away from their defense, but Mo dominated the offense.
Ladies and gentleman, 2002 was FOUR YEARS AGO. The only reason Clarett has been in the news since then is for legal transgressions. He was given a gift by Mike Shanahan and the Denver Broncos and he tossed that out the window, coming into training camp as a third-round draft pick completely out of shape, resulting in a quick departure and a never-happened NFL career.
The larger point here is, people wonder why it always seems like athletes and people around sports are degenerates, always getting into trouble legally. O.K. can somebody tell me the last time Clarett actually ran with a football in his arm? That has been years too.
He isn't an athlete who has troubles with the law. He is the guy who got drunk and got into a fight at the local bar. He is the guy on the other side of the neighborhood who hit his wife. He isn't anybody. He is Maurice Clarett from Columbus, Ohio, who recently had a brush with the law. He is police blotter material. No more, no less.
And to a certain degree, I've completely gone against everything I've said by even addressing Clarett, but he is the prime example of why it appears that there is a bigger issue with athletes and crime. Sure, there are certainly issues and I will not be so naive as to downgrade them, but is it any greater than the general public?
Maurice is an ex-athlete, who still has a recognizable name, but has completely no bearing on sports today. The other 'athlete and crime' story of the day was a former New York Giants player whose name I didn't even recognize that beat up his kid. Also, not news.
Basically, I just want every media outlet to join together and realize that Maurice Clarett is not news. A person who was relevant for one year should not be able to be relevant four years later.
I make the appeal that your relevance after your career can only be as long as your relevance during your career. Therefore, Maurice's shelf-life ended in January of 2004.
We would've been all better off for it.
