The draining effects of three weeks' worth of training combined with boring television and comfortable couches were enough to lull Al Wilson and Champ Bailey to sleep, the players said Monday. Neither set an alarm clock at their residences, both overslept and both missed an 11:15 p.m. curfew to be at the team hotel on Friday night.

The Broncos traded receiver Charlie Adams to Dallas for a sixth-round draft pick, but the trade was voided when Adams failed his physical. However, the trade shows that the Broncos are happy with their depth at receiver, even with Ashley Lelie holding out. --By suspending arguably his two best defensive players for a preseason game, Denver Broncos coach Mike Shanahan sent a message that nobody is above his rules. Cornerback Champ Bailey and linebacker Al Wilson were suspended for Denver's second preseason game against Tennessee after missing team curfew the night before. Shanahan would not discuss the specifics of what happened the night before the game, only that the players were suspended.

I am reading Amanda Lewis's Race in the Schoolyard, an ethnography of race in schools. I love to read ethnographies because the human element is so front and center. Here is an exchange during a first-grade morning "sharing time:"

Sally [1st grade student]: My mom's friend and her kid got run over by a car. Her two-month old baby and her daughter and her got run over. They're dead. [The teacher] Mr. Oritz asks how the car is.

[Later] when I [Lewis] asked Mr. Oritz about it, he explained that he was trying to get [the students] "to care about each other."

Anyway, if you've read Race in the Schoolyard and would like to share your assessment, please blog away. I'm not half through it yet but am feeling very mixed about it so far...
