What's up folks?
It's decision time in the NFL.
Who do you keep? Who do you let go?
The Broncos have a few tough choices to make, and none will be tougher than wide receiver.
Rod Smith , Javon Walker and fourth-round pick Brandon Marshall will be on the team. After that, who knows?
Based on his preseason, David Kircus has to be on the team. No receiver, Smith, Walker and Marshall included, out-performed Kircus. Kircus will be compared to Ed McCaffrey a lot simply because of the low pigment in his skin. But that wouldn't be my comparison.
My Kircus comparison is Smith. Both came from small, nationally unknown schools. And both seem to practice and play with a sense of desperation - as if they're going to lose their job if they drop the next ball. Even now, old man Smith continues to practice that way.
So, that's Smith, Walker, Marshall and Kircus.
Who's next? Todd Devoe? Darius Watts? Charlie Adams?
Devoe had a horrible drop in the preseason finale against the Arizona Cardinals. But he came back and made three consecutive catches, including a touchdown grab that saw him leap over the defender to snatch the ball.
Adams has value, and it showed when the Dallas Cowboys traded for him. Adams didn't pass the Cowboys' physical, hence the reason he's still in Denver. Understand, Adams didn't pass his physical, but that doesn't mean he's hurt. As folks have seen this preseason, Adams is just fine. However, he didn't have a spectacular preseason. And the best thing about that, is neither did Watts nor Devoe.
If the Broncos are keeping five receivers, No. 5 will be one of those three.
Broncos coach Mike Shanahan is making a lot of the cuts today, when it's all done, my two-penny bet will be that, because of Thursday's performance, Devoe will be a Broncos receiver tomorrow.
Until next time.

You be the judge....
Chris Simms and Kyle Shanahan became such good friends at the University of Texas that they have their initials tattooed on each other's lower leg.
(snip)
"We're best friends, and we'll be best friends for life," Simms said about Shanahan this week. "We hit it off from day one. We had a common bond in that our fathers (former New York Giants quarterback Phil Simms and Denver Broncos coach Mike Shanahan) have been such a big part of the NFL for a long time.
(snip)
"Kyle was a real wimp about it," Simms said. "He got a small one on his ankle. He was afraid his mom and dad would see it, so he keeps it hidden underneath his socks."
Shanahan has a different version of the experience in which each player got the initials of the other four tattooed on his lower leg.
"Let me tell you what really happened," Shanahan said. "Chris was dying to get a tattoo. When we got to the (tattoo parlor), I was the only one who already didn't have one. It wasn't any big deal for the others.
"I had to be a man about it. I got one out of loyalty to my buddies. Now, Chris, he got one the size of his calf, but I didn't want one that big because I didn't want to show off."
This insightful article is from John McClain, who's been off his game of late, a trend that seems to be continuing here....
McClain is a legitimate Hall of Fame caliber writer, his network of NFL insiders and insight is usually unparalelled. Except lately, when he seems to be mailing them in.
Or maybe too much time in Hollywood has made Mr. McClain soft? I'm not sure but articles like this aren't helping his reputation any. Or maybe he's writing "Brokeback Football" and his screenplay ran over into his sports reporting?
