Quite possibly the best player Ill ever see play for Vanderbilt was taken with the 12th overall pick today by the Broncos.

Its bittersweet since I despise Denver so much. But on the otherhand I cant think of a more perfect place for Cutler to go. Shanahan has done a great job turning Jake Plummer from an inconsistent turnover machine into a pro bowler. Cutler's biggest weakness in my opinion is that he takes chances, has iffy mechanics, and is kind of a gunslinger(just like Plummer in Arizona). Looking at what Shanny has done for Plummer, I think he'll easily be able to help Cutler. The Broncos could start me at RB and Id gain 1000 yards. So Cutler will finally have the benefit of a strong running game and oline. Denver runs a lot of bootlegs to take advantage of Plummer's ability to take off and throw on the run. Two things Cutler does well. And instead of going to some crap team like the Texans or Titans, Cutler will play for a team that will not throw him into the fire and will surround him with good players. He wont have nearly as much pressure and wont have to listen to any criticism if things dont get off to a good start.

Its gonna be pretty painful to root for the Broncos though. Ugh. Im really not looking forward to it. But a lot of Cutler's skeptics kept saying how he never won anything at Vandy. Well guess what other QB never made it to a bowl game while playing football at an academic school? John Elway. And where does Cutler end up? Playing for the Broncos? Coincidence? I dont think so. Just another sign that Cutler will turn into one of the top 5 QBs that ever lived! haha...

With Vanderbilt just a week away, wanted to take a look at them and see what Michigan's strategy might be against the Commodores.

Offensively, Vandy lost Jay Cutler to the NFL. Cutler was a first round draft pick, and obviously made their offense go. The Commodores could score, putting up points on nearly everyone save LSU and..strangely Middle Tennesse. They return 3/5's of the offensive line, and most of their skill personnel.RB, Cassen Jackson-Garrison is out after an apendectomy, and it looks as if some young, untested players will be joining first year starter Chris Nickson in the backfield.

Nickson is a run/pass QB...something that has given past Michigan defenses fits. He is VERY inexperienced however and is likely a target for Ron English's defense. WR Earl Bennett will get most of the attention from the secondary, and I'm wagering English will try to take away this "comfort blanket" from Nickson and force him to make quick reads. If Michigan's defensive line can handle the veteran Commodore offensive line, this could be a very long game for Nickson indeed. I think English will throw some blitz looks in to keep him off guard, and Michigan will try to keep Nickson from hurting them the easy way....by pulling the ball down and running with it..so expect to see Crable or one of the safeties spying alot. I really believe that Nickson's running is the only way Vandy can consitently hurt UM...he's just too inexperienced in the passing game to make it go. That means Vandy has to run rely on the offensive line and the running game, and I have doubts that they're equipped to consistently move Branch and Taylor off the ball.

I think the Wolverine offense will roll up some yardage on Vandy. They return a good number of starter from last years squad, but that might not be such a good thing. The Commodores gave up a lot of points last year(especially to the better SEC offenses), and had difficulty stopping the run. Jr. LB Jonathan Goff is said to be their best player at LB, and Vandy returns two of the three LB starters from last year. The defensive line failed to stop good running teams a year ago, and is very, very thin, as you see alot of freshmen behind starters Theo Horrocks and Ray Brown. 3/4's of the secondary returns, with the only question being the starter at FS.

I think UM's balanced attack will cause alot of problems for a Vanderbilt defense that has trouble stopping most teams. Long,Kraus,Bihl, Mitchell and Riley should be able to handle the defensive front and if the running game gets going, the secondary will be hard pressed to handle Manningham and Breaston. Both Vandy corners are listed at 5'9, and I would expect UM will attempt to get Arrington, Tabb or Savoy matched up against these shorter players. Vandy also has trouble getting adequate pressure on opposing QB's. I expect to see a good deal of blitzing from a good set of LBs. Controlling those guys with the screen pass to Hart or Grady will be essential.

Vanderbilt's punt unit was suspect as well. I don't expect that Breaston will get many opportunities to return punts in this game, unless the Commodore coaching staff has completely lost it's mind. The problem is, this usually results in some excellent field position, and that defense simply can't hold up if it's back is against the wall all game.

All in all, I don't think Vandy has the stuff to come into the Big House and win. Michigan's defense has a thing or two to prove, and unfortunately for the Commodores, they are first in line for English and the Wolverines. A shut out isn't out of the question here. I'm predicting: Michigan 35 Vanderbilt 9. I don't Vanderbilt will get one across the goal line in English's first game as DC.

Nickson runs wild on a Michigan defense that has a "thing" about running QBs. If he shows some "escapability" and the defense gets frustrated and down on itself, this game could be closer than it should be.
