NFL Titans vs Broncos
The Denver Broncos (1-1) began the home portion of the 2006 preseason with a victory against the Tennessee Titans (0-2) Saturday night at INVESCO Field at Mile High. The teams had not faced off since Christmas 2004 -- a Broncos win at The Coliseum in Nashville, Tenn. This was the first time the Titans had visited Denver since the moved to Tennessee in 1997. The game showcased the talents of two highly-touted quarterbacks -- Vince Young of Tennessee and Jay Cutlerof Denver. The Titans looked at Cutler before the draft but selected Young with the No. 3 pick. Denver drafted Cutler at No. 11.
Carlos Osorio/The Associated Press Originally uploaded by newspaperhack. Getting an opening win over a respected opponent is good (unlike losing to a I-AA patsy -- I'm looking at you Colorado and Duke), but it's time to focus on Saturday.
The opening line on DannySheridan has Alabama, again, as a double-digit favorite (16.5 on the open line). This time, the prospective doormat is a Jay Cutler-less Vanderbilt squad. With the exception of one freak pass last week against Michigan, Vandy showed it didn't have much of an offense, nor defense and its quarterback has slippery fingers (multiple fumbles from a skill player is never good). In other words, this ain't last year's Vandy, which was a blown call away from beating Florida and causing Orson and Stranko to commit hari-kiri.
Ultimately, Vandy put up about 171 yards of offense, fumbled two balls away and gave up 381 yards and three touchdowns. This does not add up to a 50-14 slaughter, but a mediocre team that'll keep the score down and lose, which is exactly what happened and what usually happens when Bama and Vandy get together.
Journo Rock Early Prediction: Alabama 20, Vanderbilt 3 Bama covers the spread! Wooo!
Other lines of note:
Boston College by 1 over Clemson Clemson wins by 10, unfortunately.
Notre Dame by 11.5 over Penn State Home opener for the Domers, but it's doubtful an 11-1 Penn State team will give up double-digits. Take PSU -- it'll be closer than expected.
Georgia by 3.5 over South Carolina Take USC to win close or lose closer. I expect Georgia to win this one, but it'll be between 1-3 points. If I'm wrong, I'll buy you a drink at Local's after the game (best bar after a game -- steel cock 'n all).
