With football season on the horizon, the latest fantasy talk has switched to football. It's amazing the popularity of fantasy football these days. From all of the fantasy-only magazines to major ones like SI and ESPN devoted to fantasy, it's taking over. I had my first draft on Monday, July 31. I'll go over my selections pick-by-pick:
Round 1 #11 - LaMont Jordan, RB, Oakland Raiders With the major backs gone already (LT, Alexander, Johnson, Barber, Portis, Edge, Rudi), I went with the next best available. A surprise to me was that Cadilac Williams was taken right in front of this pick, so it came down to Jordan or Steven Jackson. I think Jordan will get much more carries this year, and he proved that he can be a great receiver out of the backfield, so I went with him. Plus, he's a Raider, my favorite team :)
Round 2 #18 - Ronnie Brown, RB, Miami Dolphins I was very happy that he was still on the board. Steven Jackson got picked, so I went with Brown. For starters, Pot Head Williams is no longer clogging up the backfield. Plus, the Dolphins as a whole seem to be on their way up, so it made since to grab him. With a late pick in the draft, I was really excited over my first 2 picks.
Round 3 #39 - Tony Gonzalez, TE, Kansas City Chiefs All of the big WR's were gone, ditto for Antonio Gates, so I went with a surprising pick for round 3. I've never had a top TE before, so I figured I'd give it a shot. I think this could work out because Gonzalez is coming off a down year for him, so people could be writing him off, but not me. Being a Raiders fan, I know the kind of damage he can cause!
Round 4 #46 - Roy Williams, WR, Detroit Lions Everything I've read about him has been positive, as he's a guy that's being labeled as having a breakout year, thanks to Mike Martz coming in and Joey Harrington going out. What worries me is that Detroit is still Detroit, but I'll give him a shot.
Round 5 #67 - Jake Delhomme, QB, Carolina Panthers This was the 9th QB taken, and I think a pretty solid one. That's the word I use when I think of him - solid. With Keyshawn Johnson and a stud RB in DeAngelo Williams in now, I think he'll have even more weapons at his disposal. I was told to be patient and wait to draft a QB, and I think the method paid off.
Round 6 #74 - Lee Evans, WR, Buffalo Bills Like Roy Williams, here's a guy that has potential to be a breakout WR, but who knows. The Bills as a whole are pretty pathetic, so that scares me. But, he's clearly their #1 guy, so even if they suck, he'll still get touches.
Round 7 #95 - Antonio Pierce, DL, New York Giants You see, in my league, we draft defense individually, not as a whole. It makes for a longer draft, but it's cool. Since a solo tackle nets you 3 points, I made Pierce my first guy on D taken. I had him last year, and if not for an injury at the |
