I just had to mention since I had watched the Chiefs-Texans game tonight that the Texans looked good. Ok maybe the Chiefs looked bad. The Texans were running that roll out that Gary Kubiak designed so well in Denver that Jake Plummer actually looked like a decent quarterback. Surprisingly, it was working so well for the Texans that not only did David Carr look impressive but so did Sage Rosenfels. Also, sixth-rounder Wali Lundy out of Virginia was very impressive running for 59 yards on 9 carries including a touchdown.
8/22/06
8:50 - It's almost time for Frankie's league's draft, it starts at 9:30. The Yahoo draft room opens in 10 minutes and then I'll know where I'm picking. After getting 1st overall in my draft on Sunday I almost want to get 10th pick just for variety's sake but I'll be happy wherever I'm picking. No need for a rundown of all the people in the league, the only one I've ever met is Frankie. The rest are all his friends and Frankie's friends are all idiots. So this league should end very much like it did last year, with me and Frankie facing off in the Super Bowl. I beat him last year and I hope to do the same this year.
My only strategy right now is to draft a totally different roster from the one in my other league. More players to keep up on and a greater feeling of superiority if/when I win both leagues. It's worked for me in baseball this year so why not keep it going?
I figure since I wasn't able to do it for Sunday's draft, I'll do a running diary a la Bill Simmons for this draft. Just updates with my picks and any other wacky stuff that goes on. There's always a good amount of inexplicably dumb picks made in leagues manned mostly by Frankie's friends so it should be fun.
This league's settings are similar to my other one except we only start 3 wr's, 1 te, 1 def and 1 kicker.
9:01 - I get 9th pick out of 10. I'll take it. Frankie gets the coveted 3rd pick overall. That lucky fuck. Hopefully a couple decent rb's fall to me. With this league I don't doubt it. I bet I get Portis and maybe Edge? I wonder how early Manning goes, I bet top 5.
9:06 - Frankie guarantees he will draft Ashley Lelie yet again. What won't he do for the sake of comedy?
9:31 - Manning goes 4th. I love it. Portis 5th, wow.
9:32 - Steven Jackson for me. I don't know how I feel about that. Should I have taken Ronnie Brown?
9:33 - Caddy for me in the 2nd round. I like that a lot. I almost took him in the 1st round. That's a nice young rb tandem that might spend half the season listed as questionable. Awesome!
9:34 - Wow, Mike Bell goes with the 13th overall pick. A bit of a reach, unless he really does start all year. But I think he could have been had in the 3rd round.
9:38 - Carson Palmer goes with the 2nd pick in the 3rd round. I guess people are over the fears of his injury. I think that might be a round too early for him, but it's not terrible.
9:40 - Just took Kevin Jones for my flex spot. I almost took Chester Taylor instead. I feel uneasy. Did I just make a mistake?
9:42 - Randy Moss for me in the 4th. That's pretty great value for him I think. He has to be better than last year, even if it is Aaron Brooks throwing to him. Brooks didn't hurt Joe Horn's production all those years!
9:48 - Carlos Beltran is the greatest person who ever lived! By the way, I'm a Met fan.
9:50 - Ugh. Donald Driver in the 5th round. Gross. I wanted a qb but all the good ones were taken right before my pick.
9:53 - Jake Plummer becomes my top qb in the 6th. I love the beard, nuff said.
9:55 - Reggie Bush goes in the 6th. That's the latest I've seen him go since that game vs. the Titans.
10:00 - Someone just took the Bears defense in round 7, god bless America.
10:01 - I get Joe Horn to fill out my starting wr corps. Not bad at all as long as he's actually healthy this year. Do I take my 2nd qb next or a backup rb?
10:03 - Just took Ahman Green in the 8th to be my backup running back. He was one of only a couple remaining clear-cut starters. I just hope there's a decent qb left for my next pick.
10:11 - Somebody just picked Marion Barber in the 9th even though both Colt rb's are still available, people are dumb. Jason Witten for me. He was the last very good tight end left. Now I have to pray my boy Kitna is still there in the 10th.
10:13 - Kitna in the house! Mike Martz, work your magic, you fat fuck!
10:16 - And the run on kickers and defenses begins! Dipshits.
10:20 - Brett Favre becomes my backup qb in round 11. I almost picked him over Kitna a round ago. I feel a lot better knowing I'll only have to play him twice. Now I need a wideout, but the pickins are slim.
10:23 - Every halfway decent receiver left has a bye week in common with one of my starts so I picked Tatum Bell in the 12th instead. Not a huge risk here and I'm sorta shocked he lasted this long.
10:29 - Baltimore defense for me in round 13. Way too early for a defense, I know, but there's nobody on the board that I like.
10:34 - Dallas Clark in round 14. I still need a backup wideout but they all suck. This is getting bad. Dallas Clark has to be good one of these years though in that offense, right?
10:42 - I hate myself. I just had to take Santonio fucking Holmes as my backup wr. I'm gonna go throw up now.
10:46 - David Givens for me in round 16. He has a bye week conflict with Horn but now that I have Holmes, I was freed up to take the best guy left on the board.
10:55 - Lelie taken in the 17th but someone other than Frankie! The shame! Especially now that Lelie's been traded to the Falcons and he may actually have value.
10:56 - Charlie Frye becomes my #4 qb in the 17th round. I like him and it's not like I have any superstar qb's anyway so you never know, he may have to start for me at some point.
10:58 - Ernest Wilford becomes the last and possibly best of a pretty ugly wide receiver bench for me. Maybe he becomes the #1 option in Jax and not Matt Jones? We'll see. One pick left and it'll be my starting kicker. Aren't you excited?
11:05 - And Jeff Reed becomes my last pick. His bye week is week 4 and that's probably when I'll be dropping him for some other random kicker.
So how do I feel about my team? I'm glad I was able to draft a totally different roster from my other team as I intended. I like my running backs a lot. I like my tight ends a lot. I like my starting wr's and hate my bench wr's immensely. I don't really like my quarterbacks, but they'll do. My defense and kicker are both slightly above average but that's all I want from them. So yeah, I don't hate the team but I don't love it. We'll see what happens. What do you all think of it? Let me know! I need feedback! Good night!
