The Denver Broncos were founded in 1960 in Denver , CO . In 1959 minor league baseball owner Bob Howsman was awarded his very own AFL franchise. By 1960 he had put together the Denver Broncos. In September of 1960 the Broncos became the first AFL team to ever defeat an NFL team after beating the Detroit Lions 13-7. Though they did set a great record in doing so, the Broncos would struggle for many years. For over a decade the Denver Broncos were a losing team until finally, in 1972, the Broncos hired former Stanford coach John Ralston. The following year the Broncos claimed their first winning season. Ralston stayed on board for a half decade, during which the Broncos enjoyed three winning seasons. The year after Ralston left the Broncos, the Broncos made it to their first ever playoffs and their first Super Bowl, where they lost to the Cowboys. In spite of the Super Bowl loss, the 1977 season put the Broncos on the NFL map in a way they had only dreamed of in previous season.
The Denver Broncos have come a long way since their first Super Bowl attendance. They have now been to the playoffs twenty times, winning ten Division Championships, six Conference Championships, and two Super Bowls. The Broncos are currently coached by Josh McDaniels after being led by Mike Shanahan for fourteen years. McDaniels has been coaching the Broncos since 2009; he was formerly part of the coaching team for the New England Patriots. The Broncos are owned and operated, by Pat Bowlen, who also owns the Colorado Crush. In 1984 Bowlen and his siblings bought the Broncos from a near-bankrupt Edgar Kaiser, who bought the team in 1981 from Gerald Phipps, who owned the Broncos from 1961 to 1981. Phipps bought the Broncos from founder and original owner Bob Howsman. Though Howsman only owned the Broncos for their first two years as an official franchise, Howsman was a key player in founding the AFL and ultimately merging the AFL with the NFL.
The Denver Broncos play all of their home games at Invesco Field at Mile High, site of former occupant Mile High Stadium, which was initially built for the Bears by Bob Howsman in 1948. Broncos have been playing at Mile High since the teams' inception. The Broncos stadium gets its name because Denver is exactly one mile above sea level. The stadium originally seated just 17,000. In the 50's the capacity was increased to 23,100. In the 1960's the capacity was brought to first 34,000 then 50,000. With each decade Mile High was expanded until finally in 2001 a major remodel in 2001 brought the capacity to 76,125 for a Broncos game and sits 50,000 for concerts. Invesco Field at Mile High currently holds the record for “worlds loudest roar”, sustained for ten seconds at 128.74 decibels. The Mile High renovations took just three months and cost $364.2 million to complete. |
