Oregon State Beavers (Mike Riley; 5-6, 3-5 Pac-10)OSU is one of the worst disciplined teams in the country. I don't have national stats for penalty yardage, but the Beavers were near the bottom of the list last year. In fact, Street & Smith calls them the "king of the 15-yard personal foul." That's not a good thing. But if they can get over it, they could be a dark horse candidate for the Pac-10 title. Mike Hass, the Biletnikoff winner and the nation's best receiver last season, is gone, but most of the rest of the offense returns, including the entire offensive line. The defensive front seven has some holes to fill, but the secondary has always been far more useful in the pass-happy Pac-10.Texas - El Paso Miners (Mike Price; 8-4, 5-3 CUSA West)Towards the end of last year, the Miners were 8-1 and in the top 25, then turned around and lost their last three games, including a bowl loss to Toledo. Even so, Mike Price has been a welcome change from Gary Nord, who brought three straight 2-win seasons to El Paso. The Miners' quarterback is Jordan Palmer, younger brother of former USC and current Cincinnati Bengals QB Carson Palmer, and he enters his senior season as the UTEP career leader in total offense, passing yards and TD passes. If UTEP wants to challenge for the CUSA crown and a high-level bowl game, Palmer and the rest of the team are going to have to learn to take care of the ball better. They were near the bottom of the nation in turnover margin in 2005, with nearly a full TO per game in the red.Brigham Young Cougars (Bronco Mendenhall; 6-6, 5-3 Mountain West)BYU has been one of the nation's offensive powerhouses for decades, and produced the 1990 Heisman Trophy winner, Ty Detmer. Last year, the Cougars led the MWC in passing offense and were second only to Utah in total offense. John Beck, one of the better second-tier quarterbacks, returns, as does RB Curtis Brown and most of the offensive line. On the defense, however, BYU was near the bottom of the league and were near the 100 mark nationally in most statistical categories. On that side of the ball, everything turns on the linebacking corps, since the team is switching to a 3-4 defense. They're hoping that the extra linebacker will help stop TCU from running away with the conference title again.Tulsa Golden Hurricane (Steve Kragthorpe; 9-4, 6-2 CUSA West)Before Kragthorpe showed up in Tulsa, there were a lot of people questioning whether the school should even be playing Division I-A football. With just one winning season since 1986 (the year after the Missouri Valley Conference dropped its football wing) and two consecutive one-win seasons in 2001 and '02, there just didn't seem to be any point. But after the 6½ game turnaround from 1-11 to 8-5, things have been looking alright again. The Hurricane loses Garrett Mills, the top tight end in the nation last season, but five all-league players and four of the five offensive linemen return on offense. The newest addition is RB Courtney Tennial, who tired of being second on the depth chart behind Adrian Peterson at Oklahoma. He's completed his transfer year, and should dominate the CUSA rushing leader-boards. Also returning is generically-named QB Paul Smith, who was 24th in the nation in passing efficiency last year, and did not throw any interceptions in any of his last four games. The defense that was near the top of the conference in all categories returns nine starters. It will be schemed by a new coordinator, now that Todd Graham has taken the head job at Rice, but the transition has been described as "seamless."North Carolina State Wolfpack (Chuck Amato; 7-5, 3-5 ACC Atlantic)Last year's team didn't do as well as expected, what with three NFL first-round draft picks, including inexplicable #1 overall selection Mario Williams, playing on the defense. The Wolfpack finished the season in the top 15 nationally in most defensive statistics (the lowest mark was a 26th-place finish in passing defense), but the offense and special teams were absolutely dreadful (103rd nationally in total offense, and 82nd and 90th in net punting and punt returns, respectively). Some talented players return on offense, including QB Marcus Stone and C Leroy Harris, but with the defense gutted by the draft, Amato is going to have to work hard to justify those oh-so-cool wrap-around shades he always wears.Pittsburgh Panthers (Dave Wannstedt; 5-6, 4-3 Big East)Last season, you could hear Wannstedt begging the NFL to take him back from halfway across the country. Pitt started the season in the top 15 and was touted as a potential BCS party-crasher, then promptly opened their season with three straight losses, including what had to be the Worst College Football Game Ever Played, a 7-6 defeat at the hands of Nebraska in which both teams played like the Keystone Kops. Tyler Palko never lived up to the preseason hype, and looked helpless at times. The only real bright spot last year was in passing defense; Pitt was the second-best team in the country in that area. There is a lot of retooling to be done on both sides of the ball, but the schedule plays out favorably. The Panthers could be 7-0 going into their first tough game, at home against Rutgers on 21 October, and they get WVU and Louisville at home for the last two games of the regular season. Of course, everyone was saying the same thing at the beginning of last season.Colorado Buffaloes (Dan Hawkins; 7-6, 5-3 Big 12 North)I shake my head in amazement every time I remember that this was the team that won the Big 12 North last year. They were just so . . . bad. The division could have sent no one at all to Houston to play Texas, and they probably would have put up more of a fight than the Buffs did. After all the weirdness that came out of Boulder under Gary Barnett's "leadership," Dan Hawkins is definitely a breath of fresh air. Hawkins quietly put together one of the nation's most consistent programs at Boise State, which is even more impressive when one considers that he was doing so with second-tier talent across the board. Now that he potentially has access to the upper crust, he's a bit like a kid in a candy store. But above and beyond his gimmicky offense or his four WAC titles in five seasons, his biggest contribution to the CU program seems to be the reintroduction of good, clean fun (as opposed to the "fun" of pervasive NCAA violations and alleged rape). Longtime QB Joel Klatt is gone, as are two solid tight ends, but RB Hugh Charles and potential all-American C Mark Fenton are still around. Two of the best linebackers in the Big 12 are also back, but the team's not-so-secret weapon is kicker Mason Crosby, who is a mortal lock for scads of postseason awards and every applicable all-whatever PK position in the country. This guy is the reason why the NCAA needs to start tracking average field goal distance as part of its statistics package.Michigan State Spartans (John L. Smith; 5-6, 2-6 Big 10)At least the pollsters are finally starting to learn to leave MSU out of the preseason polls, since they haven't lived up to their ranking in a long time. In East Lansing, pretty much anything that could go wrong does go wrong at least once a season. Whether it's injury, bad luck, coaching screwups or just plain old inconsistency, there's always something holding the Spartans back. Last season, they beat Notre Dame in overtime, but were also absolutely demolished at home by Northwestern. Even Purdue's worst team in years beat them. It wasn't for lack of offensive firepower, though. State was in the top 20 nationally in all four major offensive statistical categories. Naturally, however, they were near the bottom defensively. If QB Drew Stanton can stay healthy and the rebuilt offensive line can gel, the offense will be just fine. If the defense can't improve, though, Smith might be looking for a new job come January.Minnesota Golden Gophers (Glen Mason; 7-5, 4-4 Big 10)Glen Freakin' Mason finally brought the Little Brown Jug back to Minneapolis. Last season, the Gophers beat Michigan for the first time since 1986, pushing their season-opening record to 5-1 in the process. The glow didn't last long, though, since they turned around and lost four of their next six games. All the same, Minnesota led the conference in scoring and rushing offense on the back of bruising RB Laurence Maroney. He's now playing for the New England Patriots, and his partner-in-crime Gary Russell (2,594 combined rushing yards) is also gone. Also gone are three starting offensive linemen (including Outland and Rimington winner Greg Eslinger), so the running game will probably take a big hit this year. The passing game should be OK, with Brian Cupito and the top three receivers still around. Four defensive starters graduated from a squad whose primary weakness was inconsistency.Fresno State Bulldogs (Pat Hill; 8-5, 6-2 WAC)Pat Hill's scheduling motto is "anyone, anytime, anywhere." The guy's got some stones. Last season, he took his Bulldogs into L.A. Coliseum for a late-season game against USC, and this season they're traveling to LSU in Baton Rouge in late October. In previous seasons, they've visited Kansas State, Washington, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Oregon, Oregon State, Colorado, Wisconsin, Ohio State, UCLA, California, Texas Tech, and Oklahoma State. And Fresno is a respectable 6-12 in major-conference road games during Hill's nine-year tenure, so this philosophy isn't just empty bravado. Last year, they couldn't finish, and that exciting USC game started a four-game losing skid to close out the season. Whether or not they can rebound from that season ending flop depends almost entirely on whether they can find a replacement for departed QB Paul Pinegar. Most of the rest of a respectable offense returns, and the defense is solid. If nothing else, the Bulldogs have the advantage of knowing where they stand very early, since they host Nevada, one of their main competitors for the conference crown, in the season opener.
