John elway motors don't know much

I alleviated the pain, with a long-term goal
Took my underground loot, without the gold
You sold platinum round the world, I sold wood in the hood
But when I'm in the street, then shit it's all good...

*Word from Las Vegas and the Team USA training camp is that Carmelo Anthony has been the top performer in the camp. Some pleaded for Melo to work on his game this summer, so apparently, Melo is a dedicated reader of SG Summer. Trim, focused, and his shots falling, Melo should make the trip to Japan for the World Championships in August. Just a few weeks ago, he was considered an outside shot to make the squad. No word on who has fared the best at the blackjack tables during camp.

*Our fair town is abuzz as usual late in July. For once I wish it could be for a Rockies’ pennant chase, but the buzz is reserved for the daily yawn that is Broncos training camp. Extended sports reports, daily newspaper stories, snippets on the free agent punter who once survived a bear attack all consume the local media. Stay tuned to the ten o’clock news to see what Ron Dayne thinks about Tom Cruise’s baby.

*The Kid had a chance to check out the DMC DJ Championships this past weekend in Boulder. Eight DJs, whittled down from quite a few more, competed for a spot to rep CO in the national finals. My pick, DJ Cisco Rockwell, handily beat the field to claim the title. His scratches were precise, beats blended flawlessly, and music selection was a bit above average (my biggest complaint for the entire comp was that the DJs used beats more suited for a rave rather than some hardcore hip hop shit.)

*My man JL Smooth, a former Slushy Gutter winner, sent me a list of college football’s all time best players by number. A couple of Buffs, Eric “Public” Bienemy and former Supreme Court Justice Byron “Whizzer” White both received mention. Bienemy played a solid 9 years in the NFL, and played in the Super Bowl for the San Diego Chargers in 1995. Yes, the Chargers did make the Super Bowl. White was a JFK appointee to the court who was a key player in the court’s civil rights activity of the 1960s. He served for nearly 30 years.

[528 Update. A steady weekend of hip hop shows and CF playing helped push the count up to a respectable 356. I scarfed down smoooooooooth CLs after both shows only served the dreaded BL and even a stale tasting PBRs. As we head into July's last weekend, the liver is scared and shivering about the prospect of August.]

Adam Schefter used to write an NFL column for the Denver Rocky Mountain News Post or whatever they are calling it these days, and he developed a bit of a reputation for having the inside scoop. But I always got the impression that he was really passing opinion off as inside information and his real sources (with the exception of the Broncos) were the assistant to the assistant jock strap washer for kickers on the practice squad.

Nevertheless, he parlayed his job at the newspaper into a regular gig appearing on NFL Network and writing for NFL, sharing his half-baked insider info for all the world to consume. The nice thing is that every once in a while he can't hide behind his so-called sources and we get to see just how inept he really is at his job.

Take, for example, his recent column on the top ten best and worst draft picks since 1995 (an odd number, but what the heck). Let's start at the top, with his worst pick, Tim Couch. Now, I'm no defender of Couch, but was he really worse than high pick quarterbacks who hardly ever played/ Was he really worse than Ryan Leaf, Cade McNown, or Akili Smith? Again, I'm not a fan of Couch, but he was a perfectly average quarterback put into a terrible situation. Think of the team put around him, and the talent put around David Carr or, better yet, Joey Harrington, and compare their stats. They are almost the same, and yet the Joester is nowhere to be found on the list.

That's just the beginning. He takes not one, but three utterly gratuitous shots at Ricky Williams, as if Ricky was the great example of draft poison over the past decade. I'm not sure if Schefter noticed, but despite Williams' off the field problems, he has been one of the best running backs in the league since 1999. To put it in terms maybe Schefter can understand, think the Browns and the Bengals would go back and draft Ricky instead of what they got in 1999? Think they would be better for it?

Here is an indication of Schefter's deep knowledge about the NFL. He calls Steve McNair his third best draft pick. Fine. McNair never quite got there for me, but lots of people seem to love him. But then Schefter calls McNair "the best player in Titans history." One, we can argue that McNair wasn't even the best player of his era: Eddie George ran for over 10,000 yards and made five Pro Bowls in his career in Tennessee (McNair went to two). Two, I've got a newsflash for Schefter, the Titans are the same franchise as the Houston Oilers. Is he seriously arguing that McNair was better than Hall of Famers George Blanda, Earl Campbell, Ken Houston, Warren Moon, Mike Munchak, and Elvin Bethea? How about fourteen time Pro Bowler and future Hall of famer Bruce Matthews (who also played when the franchise was in Tennessee)? Heck, five time Pro Bowl defensive lineman Ray Childress scared me more than McNair, but that might just be because Childress killed the Browns. The point is that an NFL expert never would have made a claim like that.

Schefter's mean-spirited, too. Curtis Enis makes the list as the fifth worst pick, and then Schefter adds, "Enis joined Blair Thomas and Ki-Jana Carter to prove that Penn State might be considered Linebacker U, but it is not exactly Running Back U." Blair Thomas was a legitimate bust--probably because he had too many carries in college--but Enis and Carter both had their careers cut short by tragic injuries. In Enis' case, a torn ACL after rushing for nearly 1000 yards his second season revealed that he had a degenerative knee condition, and is lucky to be able to walk. And Carter had one of the greatest college seasons ever before being drafted by the Bengals number one overall, and then had a catastrophic knee injury before the season started. He never recovered. Incidently, Carter got robbed of the Heisman by Rashaan Salaam, who was a first round pick who ruined his own career by getting fat while smoking too much weed (the reason why the Bears needed to spend another first round pick on Enis). Yet Salaam's no where to be found on the list, probably because he was a Colorado player and Schefter is nothing if not a homer.

It goes on and on. Apparently Courtney Brown wasn't a terrible first pick overall because he is now an average player for the Broncos. Maurice Clarett certainly belongs on the list. He was a worse pick than Lawrence Phillips--at least Phillips actually saw the field through his pot smoke haze. Only a fool would argue that McAlister was a better pick for the Ratbirds than Ray Lewis or Ed Reed. And are we really supposed to believe that the overrated Champ Bailey was a better pick than, say, Randy Moss? Warren Sapp? Marvin Harrison? Jason Taylor? I'm fairly certain ol' Tom Brady should be up there somewhere too.

So there you have it. Poor analysis, poor understanding of even the recent history of the NFL, a blatant homer, and mean-spirited to boot.

If you are an NFL fan go ahead and do yourself a favor and ignore everything Adam Schefter has to say.
