StateFansNation brings bad news about the continuing struggles of former wideout and recovering alcoholic Koren Robinson. A good kid with a vicious, vicious disease. We wish you well, Koren. Oh, and as is the case with most State supporters who are hit with bad news at home, they balence their misfortune with a piece about a troubled TarHeel (in this case, Kevin Donnalley who jerked a kid up in practice and got fired. He had a little trouble with the "roids" last year, as well.) Can't you guys just take your bad news like men without jumping up and down about TarHole bias every...single...time. Which preseason college football magazine is your favorite?
The clear choice here (and many comments in the college football blogosphere the last couple of days indicate this will be the concensus) has to be Phil Steele. He may be a crazy gambling addict who puts too much self-aggrandizement and meaningless trend statistics in his magazine, but even when all that is removed you can fill your football belly on half the good stuff that is left. One of my favorite examples: Steele lists the record over the past five years for each team, as opposed to simply the previous year's record. Another: Steele lists the coaching history (years and record) of the coaches for each school. The bottom line is that, if you want information on all the teams, no other magazine even pales in comparison to Steele's.
Phil Steele can quit any time he wants to.
What team is being supremely overrated in the preseason rankings?
Notre Dame. Some magazines are picking them to win it all! Others (like Athlon) have them at #2. This is ridiculous, even in a year in which there is no clear-cut favorite. I would put at lest ten teams ahead of Notre Dame on paper. The simplest argument against them is this: defense is more important than offense. I won't be surprised if their offense gets even better than it was last year. But their defense is uninspiring. It was mediocre last year, but at least the Irish return 9 starters. That is certainly a good sign, but it isn't a foreordination of glory. The defensive unit in South Bend has a lot of improving to do before they are even worthy of the label "good." And national championships aren't usually won even with good defenses, but with outstanding ones. Your offense will falter eventually, and if your defense is escorting the other team to the endzone, then you are screwed.
I break it down this way, from a distance and with a few months of reflection still ahead of me: Last year Notre Dame scored 36.7 points a game and their defense yielded 24.5 points a game. Applying the Pythagorean Theorem of football* and extrapolating the expected winning percentage into their 12 game schedule, we should expect the '05 Irish to win 8 or 9 games. In point of fact, they won 9, but they also had a surprisingly unimpressive schedule.
Part of the problem with the Irish is that people 'misoverestimate' (may I?) how good they were last year, and then expect them to get even better this year. I can accept that they will be better this year on both sides of the ball (though their offense doesn't have much room for improvement as it is already stellar), but I think that the improvement is starting from a lower place than the common perception. The 2005 Fighting Irish were a 9-3 team that played a pretty weak schedule and only had one win that was even remotely impressive--Michigan. They will be better this year, but their schedule will also be harder. I frankly will be surprised if the Irish do anything better than another 9-3 season this year. This may get them into a BCS boll (dangit!), but it is clearly not top 5 material, much less national championship. For my money, the absolute highest the Golden Domers should be ranked going into the season is 10th. I figure them for about 15th. Steele can be forgiven for having them 7th, since Notre Dame inflation is inevitable; all other publications I've seen so far are smoking crack.
Turn the tables. Who is underrated?
Sticking with one, I'll say Clemson. I thought the people at Athlon were vying to become the Beano Cook of ACC analysis when they pegged Clemson as the best team in the entire ACC this year. Most other publications I have seen do not have Clemson anywhere near this high. But the more I've looked at it, the more I think that Athlon might be right on this one. Last year's Clemson team was a very "unlucky" 4-4 in the ACC. They lost four conference games by a combine 14 points. Their defense was one of the best ones you never heard about, yielding only 17.6 points a game overall and 20.1 in conference play. This year they return 7 starters to this defensive squad, and on the other side of the ball they return their entire starting offensive line from last year. They have two brutal road trips to Tallahassee and Blacksburg, but the rest of their games are all winnable, by which I mean they might very well be favored in every one of those 10 games. A 9-3 or 10-2 campaign, and a top ten finish, are very much within reach for the Orange and Purple (adjust the color settings on your tv accordingly).
John C. Calhoun might be happy to see his Tigers do well this year, as long as they stay in black and white
Which conference will be the best in 2006?
The SEC plays the best defense, and Florida, Georgia, LSU, and Auburn all look to be high quality teams. Tennessee will return to the top 25, and Arkansas and Alabama might be top 25 caliber as well. One knock on the SEC is that it is top-heavy, with six teams always being good and six teams always being mediocre to bad. But if 7 or 8 teams (if South Carolina also improves over last year) can not only go bowling but can actually be top-25 caliber, then I think the SEC will deserve the title of "best conference." But I also admit I am biased. And at this early date of the summer I haven't put much thought into the arguments for other conferences.
Which "non-BCS" conference will be the best in 2006?
Gotta be the WAC. Boise State, Fresno State, Nevada (who somehow co-won the conference last year), and Hawaii should all be respectably good teams.
Which non-BCS conference team will have the best season?
Whoever wins the Utah-Boise State inter-conference match-up on September 30th. A bit of a cop-out to not settle on one team, but this is all I can drag out of my head at this point. The truth is that building a dynasty as "the" non-BCS conference school is difficult (Perhaps Louisville did it from 2001-2003). But there have tended to be a certain handful of teams over the past few years that cluster at the top. Boise State and Utah are two of those teams, and both of them actually have respectable defenses in addition to returning tons of players on both sides of the line of scrimmage. If forced to lean towards one or the other, I lean on the Broncos from Idaho at this point. If their linebackers live up to their billing, and if Zabransky keeps his head on straight.
Let's get your first read on this one...who will win the H*i*m*n? Oh, by the way, players whose last names begin with the letter "Q" are ineligible.
If Ohio State manages to 'reload' on defense and remains an elite team, then Troy Smith will have a good shot at the Heisman.
Second choice is Kenny Irons. Because the SEC is due, and Auburn will be very good.

* As far as I know, nobody has yet utilized the Pythagorean Win Theorem in analyzing college football teams. I'm in uncharted waters here, and even the stars look a little off. What I have done for this extremely tentative and initial analysis is to plug in several exponents close to "2" (including the "2.37" that is the most accurate predicor for pro football), just to get somewhere in the ballpark. The range of projected wins when I do this is never more than two, and many teams are projected for one particular win total by all the exponents.
