Plummer's decision making hurts Broncos

BY MILO F. BRYANT
The Gazette

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Jake Plummer is back.

The real Denver Broncos quarterback, apparently on hiatus for much of the season, made his return Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium. Sunday's version of Plummer, in the style those in Broncosland have come to know too well, made a couple of lousy decisions that led to a 31-27 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Welcome back Mr. Plummer.

Welcome back trepidation for the legions of Broncos followers.

Nobody questions Plummer's athletic ability, arm strength and, much of the time, his accuracy. With Plummer, it's his decision making.

On second and goal at the Chiefs' 4-yard line, Plummer rolled out to his right. He could have run and possibly scored. Instead, he threw a pass across his body, to the left, that Chiefs cornerback Patrick Surtain intercepted.

"I was trying to sneak it in there to (Stephen) Alexander, you know, one of those plays you just got to throw it away," Plummer said. "Second down, you can't make that decision down there."

The Chiefs didn't score on the ensuing drive, but the damage was done.

When a team is on the 4-yard line and has been moving the ball well, failing to score is deflating.

Plummer's attempt to squeeze a pass to Rod Smith later in the game ended in the hands of Chiefs linebacker Kawika Mitchell. That play was also deflating because it gave the Chiefs the ball 20 yards from the end zone.

Kansas City kicked a 34-yard field goal, turning the interception into a 24-21 lead.

"You think I'm happy about them?" Plummer said. "I'm pissed off about them. Why wouldn't I be? I'm a team player. I want to do whatever it takes to win.

"You're going to keep talking about them, and somebody else is going to ask me about them again. But I don't give a (expletive) after it happens. I go back and try to make plays. I didn't stop playing. I had to be the guy to go back and try to lead this team back. You didn't see me give up."

The solution to Plummer's mistakes lies in what he said.

Coach Mike Shanahan had a conversation with Plummer some time between the end of last season and the beginning of this one. Shanahan told Plummer how the offense was going to be run and the role that Plummer would play in changing the offense.

Plummer would start managing games instead of trying to win them.

Plummer tried to win Sunday, and was a cause of the Broncos losing. Plummer wasn't the only problem. The Broncos' rush defense, good all season, couldn't stop running back Larry Johnson when it needed to, particularly in the fourth quarter. And the Broncos' pass defense allowed too many big plays. But few things hurt teams worse, mentally and in the games, than turnovers. And Plummer consistently turns over the ball when he tries to be Superman.

"That play in the end zone, I think he would have liked to have run for it," Shanahan said. "Even if he couldn't have gotten the (touchdown), it still would've been good field position. I think he would've probably had that one third down and long when we were backed up to the (10)-yard line. He probably would've hit it out in the flat."

Folks, that's coach-speak for what Shanahan, veins popping out of his neck, barked at Plummer as the quarterback came off the field after each interception.

"You're going to make mistakes," Plummer said. "I've just got to limit them and hopefully not make anymore like that."

With four games left in the regular season and a possible first-round playoff bye at stake, it's time for Shanahan and Plummer to have another talk.

Plummer and the Broncos enjoyed a great stretch when Plummer was working in the box, managing the games. He tossed 229 passes without getting picked. He led the Broncos to eight wins and one loss, too.

Plummer's propensity to go outside the box worked in college. It has yet to work in the NFL. Plummer got more freewheeling on Thanksgiving, but Denver was able to overcome the mistakes in Dallas.

If Shanahan doesn't reel in his quarterback and again make him an efficient manager, the real Plummer will lead the Broncos in more games they can't overcome.

Broncos release defensive lineman Peterson (AP)
The Denver Broncos have released defensive lineman Kenny Peterson and waived guard Mitch Erickson. Peterson is an eighth-year player who joined the club as a free agent in November 2007 and had 94 tackles, including five sacks, in 42 games for the Broncos. He started 15 games in his time in Denver. Erickson joined the club as an undrafted free agent out of South Dakota State in 2008 and spent two...

Broncos Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

The Broncos came out focused and aggressive in free agency, adding defensive linemen Justin Bannan, Jarvis Green and Jamal Williams within the first five days.

Williams might be the biggest coup. He's a run-plugging force in a 3-4 scheme, as the Broncos are all too familiar with from Williams' long tenure with division-rival San Diego. The question is his health.

Williams has been battling chronic knee pain for years, and missed almost all of last season with a triceps injury.

Green and Bannan are also veteran 3-4 linemen. Green comes over from New England, where he was unspectacular in 2009 when asked to start after Richard Seymour was traded to Oakland. Bannan was a valued reserve in Baltimore who started all 16 games as an injury replacement in 2008.

Someone will gamble on Tebow at QB (Yahoo! Sports)
Too much emphasis is placed on finding a great quarterback for teams to disregard Tim Tebow.
