Fun in the Sun: Cheerleaders Recount Experience on 2007 Calendar Photo Shoot
Broncos Editor's Note: Two Broncos Cheerleaders wrote about their time in Mexico while photos were being taken for the 2007 Denver Broncos Cheerleaders Calendar. Laura Sobon, a rookie on the squad in 2006, and Katy Kainer, a four-year veteran, wrote journals for Broncos Magazine and DenverBroncos.
Katy Kainer's Calendar Shoot Journal-- July 7 -- After much anticipation (and exercise, and dieting, and appointments at Antoine Du Chez and the Palms), it was time for our calendar photo shoot in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico.
The calendar shoot is always one of the most exciting experiences of the year. The annual trip allows us to put together a beautiful calendar and provides us with some much needed rest, relaxation and team bonding.
Of course, wherever the shoot is you have to get there first and, after changing planes (and gates) twice, Sarah Culter, Kristin Sanders, Laura Freeman, Brieanna Daddio and I were over an hour late departing for Playa del Carmen.
But I am not complaining.
As far as I am concerned, they can take as much time as they need to find me an airplane, so long as it works and gets me safely to my destination. However, this was the evening that we were scheduled to attend a reception with the executives from Iberostar Resorts as well as some government officials. These are the people who made this trip possible; we didn't want be late for that.
Well, we ended up being a little late for the reception.
After a mad rush to check into the hotel and get ready for dinner, we finally made our grand entrance as everyone was beginning their appetizers. All the other girls filled us in on the events of the past two days and we were able to see some of the photographs that had been taken.

On Saturday, the crew was heading up to Xcaret Wildlife Reserve, just outside of Cancun.
The beautiful park provided many of the locations featured in this year's calendar and that day they were shooting three different pictures. The employees at Xcaret were kind enough to invite the rest of the cheerleaders to come along and spend the day in the park. The only downside was that the crew was leaving at 6 a.m. Of course, it was an opportunity not to be missed, so many of the ladies were able to drag themselves out of bed and make the trip -- myself included.
And I was so glad that I did.
After watching Cat, Jesse, and Serita take their gorgeous photographs, a few of the girls and I decided we wanted to go on an adventure.
Xcaret has a river running through the park that you can snorkel down. It was absolutely fabulous, except for the prankster that hid underwater and scared us as we were swimming through one of the river's dark caves (and yes, we all screamed like little girls). He thought he was pretty funny, but we disagreed.
By 3 p.m., it had been a long day and it was time for a nap. Following a few hours of rest and dinner with the girls, I went to bed. I needed to make sure I was well rested for my shot on Monday.

Sunday was a perfect vacation day that included many rigorous laps around the hotel's "lazy river" and a lot of strenuous hours of lying out on the beach. But I wasn't totally worthless that day -- I had managed to work out that morning.
Later, Sarah found out that her shot had been moved up from Monday evening. That was great news because it meant we would finish shooting the calendar early and everyone, including the crew, would have some free time on their last day in Mexico.
That afternoon we all stayed on the beach to watch our beautiful rookies shoot their photo. Once all the sun was gone, we headed in for the evening. Around 10, it was off to bed for Bri and I. We had to be in hair and makeup at 6 the next morning.
-- July 10 --
I got two phone calls on Monday morning. The first was my 5:30 wake-up call. The second was Kristin calling to tell me that Bri had been sick with food poisoning all night and was going to need some help getting through our shoot that day. It appeared that we were going to have a rough morning.
Of course, looking at the photographs, you'd never guess that she was sick. The photos are fantastic. I don't know how she did it, but she managed to pull herself together and she got through the photo shoot beautifully. It wasn't the easiest shoot, either. We were shooting back at Xcaret in the parks' ancient ruins exhibit. To get to our location, we had to climb down a bamboo ladder, across a ravine and back up another bamboo ladder.
We would periodically take breaks to let Bri sit down when she started to feel fatigued, but we still finished the shoot in no time. And with that, we had completed shooting the 2007 Denver Broncos Cheerleader Calendar.
-- July 11 --
The trip had flown by and it was time to go home. Our travel day was uneventful. After we all checked in for the flight, we did some duty-free shopping at the airport. The flight was on time and within a few hours we were back home in Denver. Another fabulous calendar trip had come to an end. Without a doubt, this was the best trip we've had in the three years we've been doing swimsuit calendars. The hotel, the shoot locations, the calendar staff and, most importantly, the photos were all exceptional.
