When Sheldon Kennedy of the Boston Bruins revealed that while a junior player with the Swift Current Broncos he was molested more than 300 times by his coach, Graham James, a sportlight was thrown on the situation of abuse of and by young players.
The abuse takes many forms. It may be overtly sexual. It may be an overwhelming pressure on players â€" removed from the support of their families and often living far from home â€" to perform and to fit in. It often takes the form of degrading hazing rituals, many of which have violent sexual overtones, designed to take the players beyond their inhibitions and the normal limits of their aggression.
In Crossing the line, Robinson shows how the institutionalized abuse in hockey turns the players themselves into abusers. Yet when accusations are levelled against the players, team managers and owners rally around to protect them, applying pressure to have the charges dropped or the accuser discredited.

Maurice ClarettIn his latest fall from glory former Ohio Buckeyes star running back and former Denver Broncos signee Maurice Clarett has been arrested in Ohio. Clarett was stopped after an illegal U-turn and was found to have four guns in his possession including an AK-47 assault rifle and three semi-automatic handguns. Reportedly he wasn't off to hunt deer.
For those of you who don't pay attention to football much, here's why it's such a huge fall from grace. Maurice Clarett was one of the biggest football names coming out of high shool. He was enrolled by Ohio State and had a great first year rushing for 1,237 yards in his freshman year and helping the Buckeyes to a 14-0 season and eventually the Fiesta Bowl championship. However, due to stupidity, which goes under diagnosed in some athletes, he was found guilty of falsifying a police report. Instead of sitting out the one year suspension handed down by Ohio State, Maurice tried to enter the NFL draft. But there was a tiny problem with that seeing that the NFL has a rule about not admitting players who haven't been out of high school for at least three years. He tried to fight the case all the way to the Supreme Court, but even they, surprisingly, had better things to do.
However in 2005, n a bold twist (which in 2005 was the only way to achieve twists) the Denver Broncos picked Clarett as their 101st pick. He showed up to training camp a little bit on the chubby and slow side and since he wasn't playing linebacker or place-kick holder, he was dropped before the start of the season.
Talk about a messed-up guyThat was the last we heard of Clarett till he robbed a couple at gunpoint outside a nightclub. Reports are that he flashed a hand gun and grabbed a cell phone worth $150. In fact it was near the house of one of the alleged robbery victims that he was found when he was arrested yesterday. And since she was due to testify next week at his trial, speculation is that he was going to negotiate with her on whether or not she really wanted to do that.
Some may think that Clarett missed a couple landings on his fall from grace, but let me ensure you, the fall from grace for an NFL player is a short one - some have stated it's actually more of a stumble. (See Ray Lewis, Rae Carruth, Randy Moss, Michael Irvin, Jamal Lewis). In the NFL and I imagine other pro sports (the last bastion of purity being curling), there is a fine line between praise and prison.
So recent news that Clarett had been charged with enough arms to knock of a Wal Mart Supercenter should come at no surprise except of course to his mom, I guess.
I hope the communal showers serve as a warm and fuzzy reminder of the days when he had a cushy future ahead of him before he screwed it all up.
* Sorry for my hiatus guys. Forgive me?
