The Denver Pioneers kept their Sun Belt Tournament hopes alive with a 71-61 victory over the New Orleans Privateers Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Gymnasium. The Pioneers would have qualified for tournament if New Mexico State had lost to Arkansas State Saturday night. However, New Mexico State pulled out a 67-61 victory, so the Pioneers will have to hope that Florida International loses at home to Middle Tennessee Monday night for Denver to sneak in as the tournament's eighth and final seed. Denver had a season-high six players score in double figures, led by senior forward Ragan Neblett and sophomore guard Tyesha Lowery with 13 points apiece. Junior guard Tasha Jones and junior center Sarah Cyran each added 12 points, while senior forward Stephanie Hart and freshman guard Kaitlyn King contributed 10 points each. Hart also grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds to earn her eighth career double-double. The Privateers were led in scoring by senior guard Monique Taylor with 16 points and senior forward Jeannette Jimenez with 13. After trailing 2-4 three minutes into the game, the Pioneers started a run that gave them a lead they would never relinquish. A field goal by King off an assist by Jones at 15:27 gave Denver a 10-4 lead and forced New Orleans head coach Joey Favaloro to call a time out in order to make some adjustments. However, the Pioneers continued to roll as consecutive field goals by Neblett, Hart and Cyran put Denver ahead 18-6 at 10:38, and a three-point shot by Neblett made the score 22-8 at 8:52. New Orleans made a brief rally to close to gap to five points late in the first half, but Denver pulled away to take a 34-23 lead at halftime. Neblett, playing in her final home game as a Pioneer, scored consecutive buckets to open the second half. The first was off an assist by Cyran at 19:45, the second was at 18:46 off an assist by Lowery, who had received a quick outlet pass from Jones after a defensive rebound. That gave the Pioneers a 38-23 lead and the Privateers never fully recovered. New Orleans did reduce the Denver lead to single digits on four more occasions, but Denver was able to respond to every rally. For example, New Orleans appeared to be gaining momentum when senior guard Chelsea Cole hit a three-point shot at 6:35 to make the score 54-45, but King answered with a three-point shot of her own 19 seconds later. Saturday's game was also the final home game for Hart and injured senior guard Katie Davenport. Cyran, who redshirted during the Pioneers NCAA Tournament season in 2000-01, will be the last remaining member of that squad next season. Denver finishes the regular season 6-9 in the conference, 13-14 overall. You can search for NCAA Tickets on this page.
